LOWELL, Mass - Junior left-hander
Thomas Babalis fired seven shutout innings and Binghamton baseball (4-13, 1-3 America East) got contributions throughout the lineup in a 4-0 road win over UMass Lowell (5-14, 0-4 AE) Friday afternoon at LeLacheur Park. The win in the weekend opener was BU's first conference victory of the spring and gave Binghamton its ninth win in the last 12 meetings with the River Hawks.Â
Every starter recorded at least one hit and BU snapped a early scoreless tie with four runs in the final four innings. The Bearcats scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings and then tacked on two insurance runs in the ninth. Binghamton outhit their hosts 12-2.Â
Babalis (W, 2-3) gave up a second-inning single and that was all. He fanned seven and walked a pair. Sophomore
Justin Rosner worked a clean eighth inning with a strikeout and junior
Jack Collins closed it out with a 1-2-3 ninth. Rosner's strikeout was huge in the eighth, with BU then protecting a 2-0 lead and Lowell with a runner on third and the tying run at the plate. Rosner then ended the inning with a fly out. Collins finished the game with a strikeout.Â

Colin Mason went 3-for-5 and junior catcher
Connor Aoki went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two baserunners thrown out from behind the plate. Junior second baseman
Cavan Tully added two hits.Â
In the sixth, the Bearcats opened the scoring with a run on three hits. Mason hit a one-out single and sophomore shortstop
Isaiah Corry followed with a two-out single. Graduate center fielder
Garrett Matheny then delivered an RBI single through the left side, scoring Mason to give BU a 1-0 lead. Â
In the seventh, BU scored its first run after Aoki hit a deep ball to the track in right center. The fly wasn't handled by the River Hawks outfielder, allowing Aoki to go all the way to third. Freshman DH
Evin Sullivan plated Aoki with an RBI single to center. Â
In the ninth, BU extended its lead with two more runs on two hits. Freshman third baseman Evan Bade led off with a walk and Aoki followed with a double down the left field line. Sophomore pinch hitter
Owen Parliament and sophomore first baseman
Andrew Tan then produced back-to-back sacrifice flies to account for the final scoring.Â
The teams continue their weekend series at 1 p.m. Saturday. Sophomore right-hander Gave Driscoll will make his first start of the season.Â
