Baseball edged late at UMass Lowell 4-3

Tully, Tan collect two hits apiece and Aoki drives in two runs; teams play rubber game Sunday

LOWELL, Mass. - Host UMass Lowell (6-14, 1-4 America East) scored the go-ahead run with two outs in the eighth inning to edge Binghamton baseball (4-14, 1-4 AE) 4-3 Saturday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.

The Bearcats twice rallied to tie the game after trailing 2-0 early. But each time BU tied it, the River Hawks retaliated in the bottom of the inning. Both teams collected eight hits, with all of BU's being the one-base variety.

Junior second baseman Cavan Tully and sophomore first baseman Andrew Tan each went 2-for-4. Junior catcher Connor Aoki added to his team-high RBI count (13 RBI in 15 games) with two runs driven in. On the hill, sophomore starter Gabe Driscoll went 4.1 innings and scattered four hits and two runs in a no-decision. He struck out four. Sophomore John Lumpinski worked the final 3.2 innings and allowed four hits and two runs.

UMass Lowell scored single runs in the second and fifth innings to jump ahead 2-0. In the sixth, BU got one back on two hits. Sophomore center fielder Christian Perez led off with a bunt single and Tully followed with a single to right. After a sacrifice bunt by freshman third baseman Devan Bade, Aoki plated Perez with a groundout to third.

In the seventh, BU tied the score at 2-2 with two more hits. Tan led off with a single and was moved up by a sacrifice by sophomore left fielder Tommy Reifler. After a strikeout, sophomore shortstop Isaiah Corry delivered a 2-out RBI single up the middle.

The River Hawks reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a 1-out single and a 2-out RBI single.

Binghamton tied the game one final time in the top of the eighth. Tully led off with a single and after a failed bunt, Tully stole second to move into scoring position. Aoki then plated him with an RBI single to center field before a double play ended BU's uprising.

In the bottom of the eighth, however, UML hit a 2-out double and then used a 2-strike dribbler that found outfield grass through the right side to score the winning run. In the ninth, Tan led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Reifler to bring the tying run into scoring position. But a fly out and strikeout ended the game.

The teams will play the series rubber game at noon on Sunday.
