Softball Outlasts Maine 10-7 in 10 innings

Morgan drives in career-high four runs as Bearcats take weekend series

ORONO, Maine – Senior outfielder Chloe Morgan drove in a career-high four runs, powering Binghamton (16-19, 3-6 AE) to a 10-6 win over Maine (7-31, 3-8 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday afternoon at Kessock Field. With the victory, the Bearcats take the three-game series from the Black Bears after splitting Saturday's doubleheader.

Morgan, who finished the day 2-for-6, belted a double and a triple and also set her career highs with two extra-base hits and five total bases. Finishing with two RBI for the Bearcats were redshirt freshman infielder Shelby Carvalho and freshman outfielder Sarah Rende.

The 10 runs by Binghamton represents its highest total since scoring 11 times against Army back on March 10. The 10-inning victory marked the Bearcats' second such performance this season, having also beaten UMass Lowell 2-1 in 10 innings back on April 10.

Most importantly, however, was the four-run deficit the Bearcats overcame to pull out the victory. It marked their largest comeback since also rallying from four runs down to beat UMass Lowell 11-5 on May 1, 2021.

"This was a hard-fought win today by our team," head coach Jess Bump said. "We stayed tough throughout the game and got out of some jams on defense that gave us some momentum on offense. We've been waiting for a game to break things open and I'm glad we decided to do it to win the series. We play the rest of our season on our home field and we are excited to get back to Binghamton and work hard".

With the Bearcats down 4-0 in the top of the third inning, Morgan belted a two-run double. Rende tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run single in the top of the fourth inning and Carvalho's two-run homer (her second of the season) put the Bearcats up 6-4 in the top of the sixth inning.

Maine came back to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning and had the bases loaded one inning later. Sophomore pitcher Allison L'Amoreaux, however, sent the game into extra innings with a huge strikeout.

Following a pair of scoreless innings, junior first baseman Alex Musial drilled an RBI double in the top of the 10th inning, putting the Bearcats up 7-6. Two batters later, Morgan blew the game open with a two-run triple. She was also awarded home plate on an interference call, putting the Bearcats ahead 10-6.

L'Amoreaux, who came on in relief in the sixth inning, tossed 4.2 scoreless innings to improve her record to 8-9. The loss was tagged to Caitlyn Fallon, whose record dropped to 3-3.

Morgan was one of three Bearcats to record a two-hit game against the Black Bears. She was joined by senior designated player/pitcher Sophia Pappas and freshman outfielder Alayna Harbaugh.

Musial finished the game with a career-high three runs.

Binghamton returns home to face Albany on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
