Baseball wins again, tops UMBC 6-4

Sullivan homers and drives in three; Collins notches seventh save as BU wins 10th AE game in last 12

VESTAL, N.Y. - Freshman catcher Evin Sullivan hit a home run and drove in three runs and junior closer Jack Collins earned his seventh save, steering sizzling Binghamton baseball (15-21, 11-9 America East) to a 6-4 win over UMBC (17-24, 7-13 AE) Saturday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Stadium. Binghamton has now won four straight conference series' and has gone 10-2 during that stretch.

Binghamton scored two in the first inning and never relinquished the lead, although the Retrievers were within striking range all game. The Bearcats plated a run in the third before the two teams each scored twice in the fourth. Binghamton added its final run in the sixth before UMBC pulled closer with single runs in the seventh and eighth. Collins, however, registered a four-out save and set the visitors down in order in the ninth to close it out.

Sophomore starter Gabe Driscoll (W, 3-0) scattered six hits and two runs in his six innings of work. He departed with a 6-2 lead. UMBC scored a run without benefit of a hit in the eighth and had the tying run at the plate when Collins entered with two outs. He froze the Retrievers hitter with a called third strike to strand a runner at third and end the threat.

The Bearcats, meanwhile, tallied 10 hits - two each by Sullivan and fellow freshman Logan Haskell.

In the first, BU plated two runs on three hits. Sullivan drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly and freshman second baseman Nick Roselli followed with a two-out, RBI single.

In the third, Sullivan struck again with a two-out solo home run to left - his fifth of the season.

After UMBC cut the margin to 3-2 with two in the fourth, BU got two runs back in the bottom of the frame. The Bearcats worked the bases loaded before Haskell delivered a two-out, two-run single up the middle to make it 5-2. Sullivan then nearly blew the game wide open when his bases loaded shot was hauled in by the UMBC left fielder at the wall.

Two innings later, Sullivan stroked a two-out RBI single to center to plate BU's sixth and final run.

The teams finish out the three-game weekend set with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
