VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (16-26, 12-13 America East) was held to two hits through seven innings and dropped the series opener to visiting Stony Brook (24-23, 18-7 AE) 7-2 Friday night at Bearcats Baseball Stadium.Â
Down 5-0, BU had the makings of a comeback in the eighth inning when they scored twice and had the bases loaded with one out. But back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat. The Seawolves added two runs in the ninth to finish the scoring.Â
Freshman third baseman
Devan Bade led off the eighth with a home run to the deepest part of the park. Bade belted a 1-0 pitch over the center field wall for his second home run of the season. Then with one out, BU used three walks and a single to plate another run and load the bases for the heart of the order. But with the tying run on first, BU's uprising stalled.Â
Stony Brook led 1-0 before breaking the game open with four runs on just two hits in the sixth. A walk, squeeze bunt and infield throwing error contributed to the big inning. The Seawolves totalled 10 hits and recorded 12 strikeouts on the defensive side.
Bade and junior first baseman
Connor Aoki had BU's RBIs, with Aoki's coming on a bases-loaded walk.Â
The teams continue the weekend series with a 2 p.m. game Saturday. Before the game, the Bearcats will honor their six seniors: shortstop
Jake Evans, catcher/1B
Connor Aoki, outfielders
Colin Mason,
Garrett Matheny and
Nick Di Vietro and pitcher
Dom DiRado. Â
