POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer controlled the second half with 14 shots and numerous scoring opportunities before the Bearcats (1-1-1) had to settle for a 1-1 tie at Marist (0-1-2)Â Thursday night at Tenney Stadium.Â
The Red Foxes struck first in the 33rd minute after a takeaway deep in BU's defense led to a breakaway goal.Â
But after trailing 1-0 at half, the Bearcats turned up the offensive pressure in the second half and tied it in the 57th minute. Seniors
Olivia McKnight and
Maya Anand combined for the tally, Anand's second of the season. McKnight did some good 1-on-1 work to the left of the goal and when she hit the endline, McKnight sent a short cross to the six, where Anand beat her mark and tapped it into the net to even the game at 1-1.
Binghamton produced a bunch of dangerous chances in the game's final 20 minutes, several of which came off the foot of Anand, who wound up with seven shots - four on goal.Â
"We showed a very good response after being a goal down at halftime," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Credit Marist for their effort and tactics in the first half. But our response with a couple of adjustments was terrific and we got a good goal out of it for the tie. We're certainly disappointed some of the quality chances didn't result in a game-winner, but Marist's goalkeeper was outstanding. In the end, we learned we can come back and play with the energy and spirit to match the tactical approach to get a result. We'll rest up from this hard-fought match and begin to prep for the trip to Michigan State."
For the third straight game, BU splits its keeper duties. Senior
Nicole Scott started and made four saves in the first half. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Williams was called on to make just one save over the final 45 minutes.
The Bearcats finished the game with a 19-17 edge in shots - and put 10 shots on goal.Â
Binghamton next travels to East Lansing for a Sunday afternoon game against Big Ten member Michigan State. Â
