HARRISONBURG, Va. – Tyler Clegg and Cameron Arnold netted second-half goals, lifting James Madison (1-0-0) to a 3-1 win over Binghamton (0-1-0) in the opening round of the Dukes' men's soccer invitational on Thursday night at Sentera Park. The final round of the JMU Invitational is slated for Sunday, with the Bearcats meeting Drexel at noon.
Binghamton out shot the Dukes 14-9 for the game and held a 1-0 lead with time winding down in the first half. James Madison however, got goals in the final minute of each half and also converted a second-half free kick to pull out the victory.
"I thought overall we played very well but I am very disappointed with how we managed the game in the closing minute of each half," head coach
Paul Marco said. "Several of our new players were good out there tonight but overall, we needed to finish the periods better."
One of the new Bearcat players – junior midfielder
Markos Touroukis – netted the first goal of the match. In the 34th minute, he took a short pass from redshirt senior midfielder
Parker McKnight and from the left edge of the box, fired the ball into the upper-right corner of the net.
In the final 50 seconds of the first half, however, the Dukes turned the game around with an unassisted goal by Josiah Blanton. He got by the Bearcat defense and shot the ball into the net from close range.
Clegg's game winner came off a free kick in the 64th minute. His shot hit the right post but deflected into the net.
With the Bearcats pressing for the game tying score, Arnold iced the game with his goal in the 89th minute. His shot from the middle of the box found the upper-right corner of the net.
Touroukis, who transferred from Coker College, was one of four newcomers in the Bearcats' starting lineup on Thursday night. He was joined by freshman back
Luke Yates, sophomore back
Carlo Cavalar and junior back
Joe Spires. Spires previously played at Manhattan while Cavalar was at Lipscomb last year.
Touroukis is the first Binghamton player to score a goal in their first game with the Bearcats since
Noah Luescher netted a goal against George Washington in the 2017 season opener.
NOTE: Drexel tied NJIT 2-2 in the other first-round game at the JMU Invitational on Thursday.
