VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton volleyball finished out the Bearcat Classic Saturday, splitting its two matches and finishing with a 2-1 overall record. The Bearcats fell to ACC member Boston College in three sets, but rebounded with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-21 win over Siena.
"I'm very proud of the effort we put in this weekend," head coach Allie Yaeger said. "The fans were great and the team is building more and more every game. I give credit to Coach Werneke and the work he has put in with our blockers and it showed in our effort against Siena."
Against the Saints (0-3), the Bearcats (2-1) climbed out of a 5-2 hole to win the first set. An 8-0 run capped off by a Siena attack error quickly made the score 14-7 in favor of the hosts. Two kills by Giulia Bonifacio sandwiched around a kill by Stefana Stan ended the frame at 25-17.
The second went back-and-forth, but a key 4-0 stretch gave BU some breathing room. The mini run was sparked by a block from Stan and Stephanie Gatto and an ace for Tsvetelina Ilieva. Siena rallied back to tie it, but a 6-1 run ended the set at 25-20 in favor of Binghamton.
The Bearcats led most of the way in the final set despite Siena grabbing a 12-11 lead after libero Gracie Hallie recorded an ace. Stan and Bonifacio each had kills to spark a 5-1 run and BU never looked back. The Saints battled to bring it to 24-21 before Bonifacio put the match away with her ninth kill.
Alongside Bonifacio, Ilieva and Stan had nine kills apiece. Gatto had seven block assists and Sydney Aguirre added 15 digs.
Against Boston College, Binghamton fought hard but fell 20-25, 18-25, 17-25. Ilieva had 10 kills for the match followed by Bonifacio's six.Â
The duo was named to the all-tournament team.
The Bearcats took two of three contests on the weekend, and will now head east for a tournament at Central Connecticut State. They will take on the host Blue Devils Friday before facing Columbia and St. Peter's Saturday.
