ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Binghamton women's tennis had a solid start to their 2022-23 campaign, with two singles players shining at the Navy Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational. The eight-team, three-day event was held at the Brigade Sports Complex. There were five singles and three doubles flights and sophomore
Natalia Aruj and junior
Abby Ackroyd enjoyed the most success for the Bearcats.
Aruj went 4-0 to capture the "B" singles flight. She defeated Sylvia Ecklund of host Navy in Sunday's finals. On Saturday, Aruj outlasted Maitree Root of George Mason, 6-3,4-6,10-8 in the semifinals.Â
Ackroyd, meanwhile, shook off an opening-round loss and rattled off three straight wins to capture the "D" singles consolation bracket. In the consi semifinals on Saturday, Ackroyd dropped the first set before rallying past Dana Edson of George Mason 5-7,6-2,10-6. On Sunday, Ackroyd finished with a resounding 6-0, 6-0 win over Haleigh Latta of Mary Washington.
Aruj also paired with freshman
Loren Cuomo for a win in the "A" doubles flight. The Bearcats' other win came off the racket of sophomore
Maria Pereira at "C" singles.Â
"As a team, I was impressed with how we competed the whole weekend," head coach
Libby McGovern said. "We played a lot of close sets and matches in both singles and doubles, which is where we want to be for the first tournament of the season. The biggest take away from the weekend is our need for continued growth on staying in the present and thinking through and planning each point - making sure every shot has a purpose to gain control of the rally. I'm looking forward to seeing how we continue to progress at our next tournament at Army."
Binghamton next competes at the West Point Invitational on Sept. 23-24.
