Volleyball to compete at West Virginia Tournament

Bearcats take on Delaware State and West Virginia Friday, face Merrimack Saturday

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton volleyball hits the road for another non-conference tournament this week, as the team takes on Delaware State, West Virginia and Merrimack in Morgantown. The Bearcats sit at 7-2 overall, and have a winning record in all three tournaments played thus far.

Binghamton Notes
  • BU has won 20 of its last 23 sets and have won six of its last seven matches.
  • Junior outside hitter Tsvetelina Ilieva and freshman right side hitter Giulia Bonifacio were selected to the Georgetown Invitational All-Tournament Team last weekend. Bonifacio was named America East Rookie of the Week for the second week in a row.
  • Junior middle blocker Stephanie Gatto leads the conference with 1.52 blocks per set. Junior Anna Sprys is second with 1.19 blocks per set.
  • Freshman libero Madison Konopka leads the way with 124 digs. Freshman setter Lottie Scully has handed out a team-high 219 assists.
  • Binghamton had a season high .352 hitting percentage against Rider last Saturday.

Scouting Delaware State
  • The 2021 MEAC runner-ups are off to another strong start in 2022, having posted an 8-2 record thus far. The Hornets went 26-5 a season ago and made an NIVC appearance.
  • They have won eight straight games since starting 0-2. 
  • Senior Karen Cordero leads the way with 89 kills, followed by junior Alondra Maldonado (81) and senior Sydney Lewis (71).
  • Delaware State went 3-0 at the ISTAP HBCU Challenge, sweeping Alcorn State, Alabama A&M and Alabama State.

About the Mountaineers

  • West Virginia enters play at 3-6 on the season and are coming off a 1-2 weekend at South Dakota after defeating Northern Colorado and falling to South Dakota and Cal State Bakersfield.

  • Two of its three wins have come in five sets. The Mountaineers also swept Duquesne.

  • Fifth-year Adrian Ell leads the way with 100 kills. She also has a team-high 11 aces.

  • Freshman Tierney Jackson has 34 blocks, including four performances with five or more to her credit thus far.

Scouting Merrimack

  • The Warriors are 2-5, having defeated St. Peter's and Hartfoord thus far. They also have a five-set loss to Siena.

  • Sophomore right side hitter Sydney Green leads the way with 57 kills, followed by freshman Hannah Webber's 43.

  • Freshman Cate Wright has 14 aces, good enough to lead the team. Lauren Mattiucci has 48 digs.

  • This will be the first ever matchup between Merrimack and Binghamton.
