Volleyball to host Niagara Tuesday

Bearcats sit at 8-4 heading into play with Purple Eagles

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton volleyball will hit the floor in the West Gym Tuesday against Niagara in its last non-conference matchup before America East play. The team enters play at 8-4 on the season, defeating Merrimack in its last match in straight sets.

Binghamton Notes

  • The Bearcats dominated Merrimack Friday, but fell in two tight contests to Delaware State and West Virginia Thursday. Freshman Giulia Bonifacio had another strong weekend (40 kills, 36 digs) and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

  • Junior Tsvetelina Ilieva has registered six straight double digit-kill efforts, adding a total of 38 last weekend. She and Bonifacio have combined for over 56% of the team's kills.

  • Freshman libero Madison Konopka had a season-high 23 digs against Delaware State. She now has 178 on the season and is tied for third in the America East with 4.14 per set.

  • BU has a .228 hitting percentage on the season compared to its opponents' .167 mark. The team also has 105.5 blocks compared to 66 for its competition.

  • The Bearcats will face the Purple Eagles for the ninth time in program history Tuesday. Binghamton holds a 6-2 lead in the all-time series.


Scouting Niagara

  • Niagara enters play at 3-8 on the season, but has faced a rigorous schedule thus far. An impressive win over AE member Bryant and a four-set victory over Penn have highlighted the season thus far. The Purple Eagles also won a set over defending AE champion UMBC, but ultimately fell in four frames.

  • Having already kicked off MAAC play, Niagara is 1-1 in the conference. It defeated Quinnipiac and fell to Fairfield.

  • Freshman Kinga Wronska leads the team with 101 kills. She had 20 on .317 hitting against Bryant on Aug. 26.

  • Sophomore libero Bella Peroni has 117 digs. She has had 10 or more digs in seven contests. 

  • The Purple Eagles are also a strong blocking team. They have 60 to its opponents 59, led by Sophomore middle blocker Laryssa Imbuzeiro's 30.

BU will have 12 days to prepare for America East play. They will head to New Hampshire for a road match against the Wildcats Oct. 2. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
