VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton volleyball was strong from start to finish Tuesday night, taking down Niagara in three sets by a score of 25-16, 25-15, 25-16. The Bearcats will now enter America East play at 9-4 on the season after a complete effort on both sides of the ball.
"It was a complete team effort tonight," head coach Allie Yaeger said. "Everyone was getting sets and executing at a high level. We played loose and error free and it was nice to get a victory before America East play."
Giulia Bonifacio led the way offensively for BU, contributing 17 kills with just two errors (good enough for a .577 hitting percentage). Stefana Stan had 11 kills, followed by nine for Tsvetelina Ilieva. Anna Sprys added six blocks to lead the defense.
The Bearcats raced to a 6-1 lead in the first set, thanks to two kills by Stan and three attack errors by the visitors. After taking a 9-3 lead, the Purple Eagles never got closer than a five point deficit. A kill by Bonifacio ended the frame at 25-16.
The second set was tight at the halfway point, with the score at 15-13 at the media timeout. From there, Binghamton went on a 10-2 run to take a two sets to zero lead, scoring the final seven points. Two kills by Ilieva and an ace by Lottie Scully ended the set.
A dominating 13-1 run kickstarted the third set, as Binghamton ran away with the win. Despite a 6-0 run by the Purple Eagles, the Bearcats grabbed the final point on an attack error.
Lottie Scully handed out 33 assists in the win. Freshman libero Madison Konopka had 15 digs.
BU will hit the road for its first America East contest against New Hampshire on Sunday, October 2. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
