Volleyball to play three matches in Washington D.C.

Bearcats take on George Washington and Georgetown Friday, finish Saturday against Rider

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton volleyball hits the road for another weekend tournament, beginning with two matches Friday against George Washington and Georgetown, finished with a final contest against Rider Saturday. The Bearcats have won four matches in a row and sit at 5-1 on the year.

Bearcat Brief

  • The Bearcats did not lose a set last weekend in Connecticut. Freshman Giulia Bonifacio was named Tournament MVP and Tsvetelina Ilieva was named to the All-Tournament team. The duo leads BU with 62 and 60 kills respectively.

  • Freshman Madison Konopka leads with 77 digs. She had 19 digs against St Peter's in the tournament finale.

  • Senior middle blocker put together an impressive weekend, notching 20 kills and nine blocks. She had 14 kills against St. Peter's on just 16 swings and did not register an error.

  • Freshman Lottie Scully handed out 72 assists on the weekend, including 28 against Central Connecticut State. She added 26 digs and is now second on the team with 49 on the season.


About George Washington

  • The Colonials enter play at 2-4 overall, but are coming off a 2-1 weekend at Bucknell. Despite losing to the Bison, the team rebounded to defeat LIU Brooklyn (3-2) and NJIT (3-0).

  • Junior outside hitter Elizabeth Drelling leads the team with 76 kills. She has a 20-kill performance (against American on Aug. 27) under her belt. She also had 19 kills against LIU.

  • Junior opposite hitter Liv Womble has added 73 kills. She had 20 kills against LIU and had a .478 hitting percentage against NJIT.

  • Sophomore outside hitter Brittany Myers was the second player to reach the 20-kill mark against LIU. She has 35 on the season and 30 in her last two matches.

Hoyas seeking first win

  • Georgetown enters with a 0-6 record. It is coming off a tight 3-2 loss to Stony Brook.

  • Sophomore outside hitter Mary Grace Goyena is a key cog on offense. She has 62 kills on the season, including a 14-kill performance against New Orleans.

  • Ruth Kayongo (.235) and Giselle Williams (.263) lead the team in hitting percentage. Lilly Costigan is the team's primary setter and leads the team with 125 assists.

  • Defensively, Karis Park leads the way with 74 digs. Senior middle blocker Makayla Serrett has 12 blocks. She had seven against Stony Brook.

Broncs looking to build off strong 2021 season

  • Rider is 1-5 on the season, and is looking to get hot following a strong 2021 season that saw them finish with a 19-12 record. The team went 14-4 in MAAC play.

  • Six Broncs have 20 or more kills, led by senior opposite hitter Morgan Romano's 51.

  • Freshman middle hitter Carley McAleavey leads with a .232 hitting percentage.

  • Rider went 1-2 last weekend at Lehigh. It fell to Buffalo (3-0) before defeating Cleveland State 3-1. The tournament finished with a loss to Lehigh 3-2.


Up Next

Binghamton will cap off tournament play at West Virginia September 15-16. It will take on Delaware State and hosts Mountaineers Thursday before finishing play against Merrimack Friday.
