SMITHFIELD, R.I. - First-place Binghamton women's soccer (3-4-5, 2-0-2 America East) peppered Bryant with 25 shots and 12 corner kicks but had to settle for a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at Bierne Stadium. With the tie, BU kept a hold of first place in the conference standings halfway through the slate and extended its unbeaten streak to five (2-0-3).
Bryant opened the scoring in the sixth minute, cashing in on a penalty kick after a breakaway led to a tripping call in the box.Â
But the Bearcats countered in the 16th minute off a corner kick. Senior back
Lexi Vegoda curled a left-footed ball tight to the goal, where it bounced between a pair of Bulldog defenders. Senior back
Grace Vittoria headed it off the bounce into the top netting for her first collegiate goal.Â
Binghamton continued to push for a second goal and had numerous golden chances inside 12 yards but couldn't find the winner.
The Bearcats held a 25-8 shots advantage and a heavy 12-2 margin in corners.Â
"We are pleased with the effort and how we performed today," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We defended and attacked well and created numerous chances. But we are disappointed ... it was a match we could have and should have had the full three points if we just had finished the great opportunities we had. Credit to Bryant for how they defended in their final third. But it was similar to our last match, where we also had heavy statistical advantages but it didn't show in the final score. In a lot of ways this week showed we are a championship caliber, contending team. We will keep working and know we can create our own luck and show our ability and class on the field."Â
Binghamton heads to Lowell next Sunday for an afternoon tilt with the River Hawks.Â
