Men’s Soccer Battles Back for 2-2 Tie at UMBC

Bearcats to face Retrievers on the road again Saturday in AE Tournament

BALTIMORE, Md.  — Senior midfielder Markos Touroukis scored in the 85th minute (4-9-3, 2-2-3 AE), as Binghamton (4–9-3, 2-2-3 AE) forced a 2-2 tie against UMBC (7-3-5, 3-1-3 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Tuesday evening at the Retriever Soccer Park. The Bearcats will return to UMBC as the No. 6 seed in the America East quarterfinals and will face the No. 3 Retrievers on Saturday at 7 p.m. The winner of that match will travel to No. 2 Bryant next Wednesday.

With Binghamton down 2-1 and just over five minutes remaining in the match, Touroukis fired the ball from the top of the penalty box and found the back of the net to deadlock the match. The goal marked Touroukis' second of the season.

The first goal of the game, meanwhile, was scored by redshirt senior midfielder Anthony Lazaridis in the sixth minute. He kicked the ball away from the Retriever's goalkeeper to record his third goal of the season.

Ryan Calheria scored the equalizer in the 44th minute. Tyler Harry found Hans Nesheim in the box who then headed the ball to Calheira. In the 83rd minute, Nesheim scored UMBC's next goal with assists from William Forby and Taylor Calheira.

The Retrievers outshot the Bearcats 20-7 and held a shot-on-goal advantage of 7-3.

In goal, graduate student Dylan McDermott made five saves

"I am very proud of our guys tonight," head coach Paul Marco said. "We were not going to concede a defeat tonight and I was really happy with how we never gave up."

NOTES: This is the second season in a row Binghamton will face UMBC in the AE quarterfinals. Last year, the Bearcats defeated the Retrievers 3-2 on Nov. 5 after winning the regular-season finale 4-2.
