BALTIMORE, MD. — Senior midfielder Markos Touroukis scored in the 79th minute, leading sixth-seeded Binghamton (5-9-3) to a 1-0 victory over third-seeded UMBC (7-4-5) in an America East quarterfinal game on Saturday night at the Retriever Soccer Field. With the victory, the Bearcats advance to the conference semifinals and will head to second-seeded Bryant for a 7 p.m. match on Wednesday.
Touroukis, who scored the game-tying goal in last Tuesday's match against the Retrievers, found the ball in the 79th minute and fired it into the left side of the net. The goal marked his third of the season and was assisted by redshirt senior midfielder Anthony Lazaridis and junior midfielder Billy Clark.
For Touroukis, the goal marked his second career game winner in a playoff match. He scored in overtime last year as the Bearcats won 3-2 in the quarterfinals - also at UMBC.
In goal, graduate student Dylan McDermott made four saves to record his second shutout of the season. Just four minutes into the second half, his save against a penalty kick prevented UMBC from taking the lead. In the 65th minute, McDermott made a lunging save to keep the match scoreless. His final save of the game was with 17 seconds left, blocking a shot made at the top of the goal box.
With five seconds left in the match, the Retrievers took a corner kick and managed to get the ball in front of the net, but the shot was blocked by the Binghamton defense.
"We were outstanding tonight on defense," head coach Paul Marco said. "Dylan and the backline were terrific and what a great goal we scored. We must have had five of our players involved in setting up the goal and Markos had a terrific finish."
Binghamton held a slight 13-12 edge in total shots, including an 8-6 margin in shots on goal.
McDermott recorded four saves to record his second solo shutout of the season.
The Bearcats' starting back line tonight consisted of graduate students Michael Bush and Devin Heanue as well as seniors Will Noecker and Joe Spires.
