Women’s Basketball Edged by Furman 74-72

Weltz scored 18 points, Bowman adds 14 points

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Tate Walters hit the go-ahead jumper with 18 seconds remaining in regulation, leading Furman (4-3) to a 74-72 win over Binghamton (2-5) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez. The contest marked the second of two games for the Bearcats at the Puerto Rico Sports Tours Clasico.

Walters, who finished with 14 points, was one of four Paladin players to reach double figures in scoring. Jada Session turned in a 19-point, 16-round performance, Sydney Ryan added 18 points and Kate Johnson chipped in 11 points.

For the Bearcats, redshirt sophomore guard Jadyn Weltz led the way with 18 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and a steal. Graduate student guard Denai Bowman netted 14 points to go along with three rebounds, two assists and three steals. Redshirt sophomore guard Ella Wanzer, meanwhile, finished with 12 points.

In a game that featured seven ties and eight lead changes, Binghamton opened up a 48-37 lead at the half. The Bearcats shot 60 percent over the first 20 minutes (21-of-35) and was 50 percent from three-point range (6-of-12).

Furman, however, outscored the Bearcats 22-11 in the third period to deadlock the game at 59-59. Ryan led the way with four three-point field goals during that stretch.

The lead swung back and fourth in the fourth period with Weltz tying the game at 72-72 on a made free throw with 46 seconds left to go. On the ensuing possession, Walter missed a three-point field goal but after Ryan got the offensive rebound, she got a second chance from close range to put Furman ahead for good.

Furman outrebounded Binghamton 43-22 and got 18 of its rebounds on the offensive end. The Paladins also held a commanding 16-2 lead in second-chance points.

Junior forward Genevieve Coleman scored eight points while sophomore guard Meghan Casey finished with seven points and dished out three assists for the second game in a row.

The 48 first-half points represent Binghamton's highest 20-minute total since its scored 57 points in the first half against Mansfield back on Nov. 23, 2021.

For the season, the Bearcats have now scored 70 or more points four times this season.

Binghamton returns home to face Cornell this coming Wednesday at 6:07 p.m.
