Women's Basketball Defeated by Cornell 58-57

O'Connor nets team-high 14 points, Weltz adds 10 points

VESTAL, N.Y — Azareya Kilgoe made the go-ahead free with four seconds left, leading Cornell (3-4) to a 58-57 victory over Binghamton (2-6) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Wednesday evening at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The contest marked the Bearcats' first game at home following three straight road games.

The Big Red trailed 57-55 until Kaya Ingram made a layup with four seconds left to deadlock the game. Kilgoe was fouled on the same play and since Cornell was in the bonus, she went to the foul line and made the first of her two shots.

Rachel Kaus scored a game-high 20 points for the Big Red. She shot 10-for-13 from the floor. Summer Parker-Hall, meanwhile, notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Graduate student guard Shannon O'Connor led the Bearcats with 14 points, which marked her Binghamton-career high. Her overall career-high game was when she played for Bryant and scored 17 points against Wagner on Jan. 6, 2022. Against Cornell, she went 6-for-7 and netted both of her three-point field goal attempts.

Redshirt sophomore guard Jadyn Weltz finished with 10 points. She also added eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Weltz has now reached double figures in scoring a team-best five straight games and continues to rank second in the America East with 4.3 assists per game.

In a game that featured 10 ties and 13 lead changes, Binghamton broke a 33-33 tie with a 13-6 run in a span of 3:45 to go up 46-39 with 3:05 left in the third period. O'Conner scored five points during that stretch and the Bearcats hit three three-point field goals.

Following a Cornell timeout, the Big Red appeared to take control of the game with a 14-2 run in a span of 7:12 to go up 53-48 with 5:15 left in regulation. Binghamton, however, got back-to-back three-point field goals by Weltz and freshman guard Bella Pucci to go up 56-55 with 2:26 left to go.

Weltz made a free throw with 17 seconds left to go, giving the Bearcats a two-point lead. But after Cornell took the lead, Binghamton was unable to score on their final two possessions.

Cornell's inside game proved decisive as it had a 52-28 advantage in points in the paint. The Big Red shot 50.9 percent from the field, making 27 of their 53 shots.

"We didn't play our tempo and our game tonight and Cornell did," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "To score 52 points in the paint was a big difference and we were very sloppy tonight and didn't take care of the ball well."

Both teams struggled to take care of the basketball, committing 18 turnovers each.

Redshirt sophomore guard Ella Wanzer finished with seven points, dished out three assists and recorded a block.

Pucci finished with six points as did graduate student guard Denai Bowman. In the process, Bowman reached the 1,300-point mark for her career - with exactly that point total. She remains in seventh place all time in program history and is now 41 points away from tying Leah Truncale (1998-02) for sixth place all time with 1,341 career points.

Binghamton heads to ACC member Pittsburgh on Sunday for a 6 p.m. game.
