VESTAL, N.Y. – Host Binghamton (3-8) had three players reach double figures in scoring as it defeated Coppin State (4-8) 64-52 in a non-conference women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory snapped the Bearcats' six-game losing skid and was their third win of the season on their home court.
Redshirt sophomore guard
Jadyn Weltz led the Bearcats with a season-high 19 points to go along with a game-high seven assists as well as four rebounds. She was 8-of-13 from the field and is now averaging a conference-high and career-best 5.2 assists per game.
Sophomore forward
Camryn Fauria recorded the best game of her career, finishing with career highs in both points (16) and rebounds (10) to record her first career double-double. She shot 7-of-14 from the field.
Also scoring 16 points in the win was junior forward
Genevieve Coleman. She was 7-of-11 from the floor and added four rebounds, a block and an assist.
The Bearcat victory overshadowed a game-high, 27-point performance by Laila Lawrence of Coppin State. She shot 11-of-17 from the field, grabbed 10 rebounds to record the double-double, blocked a shot and added three steals.
Binghamton struggled shooting in the first half and held a slim 23-22 lead at the half. Over the final 20 minutes, however, the Bearcats shot 17-of-28 (60.7) and reeled off 41 points.
The Bearcats opened up the third period with an 13-5 run over the first 4:21 of play to take a 36-27 lead. Coleman had six of her points during that stretch.
The Eagles, however, wouldn't go away quietly and were within 47-43 as Lawrence sank a pair of free throws with 8:32 remaining in regulation.
Over the ensuing 2:37 of play, the Bearcats got the separation they needed to close out the game. They went on an 11-3 run to go up 58-46 with 3:55 left to go. Weltz and Fauria paced a balanced attack with four points each during that span.
"It's great that Camryn, Jadyn and Genevieve had the games they did today," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Coppin State did a good job covering (leading scorer)
Ella Wanzer so we needed other people to step today up and they did. I thought the spacing on our shots was much better in the second half."
Wanzer was held to just 2-of-6 shooting but still finished with seven points, four rebounds, a block and an assist. Her first-quarter three-point field goal gave her 112 for her career.
Sophomore guard
Meghan Casey made her second straight start and dished out a season-high four assists. Off the bench, freshman forward
Kendall Bennett grabbed a career-high six rebounds.
Binghamton, which came into the game leading the conference in field goal percentage (.431), shot 47.4 percent against the Eagles. The Bearcats also dished out 15 assists to stay right on their conference-leading 15.1 assists per game.
Binghamton heads to Army on Wednesday for a 1 p.m. game.
