EASTON, Mass. – Senior guard
Tymu Chenery scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lift Binghamton men's basketball (5-4) to a 79-64 road win over Stonehill (1-8) Saturday afternoon at Merkert Gym. The win was BU's fifth in its last seven games.
Chenery hit 7-of-9 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the line to hit the 20-point mark for the third time in the last four games. He blocked a career-high five blocks and keyed a 16-7 run early in the second half with eight points as BU stretched a four-point margin to 13, 48-35, with 14:09 left. The Bearcats didn't allow Stonehill any closer than eight points the rest of the way.
"It was a hard fought road victory," head coach
Levell Sanders said. "It's not easy winning Division I basketball games on the road so I'm happy we were able to come out and be successful. For the most part we did a good job guarding the 3-point line and against their zone, we tried to find the spots and crash the boards. We have a few injuries and guys stepped up … it was a total team effort."
Graduate point guard
Symir Torrence flirted with a triple-double again before winding up with 11 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Torrence entered the game ninth in the nation in assists and will climb following the performance.
Senior forward
Nehemiah Benson contributed 25 strong minutes with career-highs of 17 points and nine rebounds. Benson grabbed six offensive boards and made 7-of-12 shots.
Sophomore forward
Chris Walker and graduate forward
Armon Harried gave BU its fourth and fifth double-digit scorers with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Walker canned three free throws after being fouled firing a three, and his conversions pushed BU's lead back to double digits, 69-57, with 3:46 left. Binghamton made 7-of-7 from the line in the last four minutes to protect its cushion.
In the first half, BU trailed by six before embarking on an 18-2 run that spanned seven minutes. Walker and Chenery tallied five points apiece during the run, which gave the Bearcats a 27-17 lead.
Benson scored BU's opening seven points and had a team-high 10 points at intermission as the Bearcats forged a 32-26 lead. Binghamton held the Skyhawks to just 29% shooting and four field goals over the final 13 minutes of the half.
The Bearcats return home for the first of two straight games at the Events Center when BU welcomes Le Moyne next Saturday afternoon, Dec. 9 for the "Battle for the Interstate."
