VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton men's basketball (8-5) closed out its non-conference schedule and also finished the 2023 calendar year with a convincing 108-52 win over visiting Marywood (5-7) Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The 56-point win was the second-largest margin in the program's Division I era.
After an eight-day holiday break, the Bearcats put six in double figures and shot 64 percent against their Division III opponent from just across the Pennsylvania border.Â
Binghamton opened by hitting 8-of-9 shots, ran off to a 26-8 lead and never looked back in winning for the eighth time in the last 11 games. Â
Freshman forward
Gavin Walsh scored a season-high 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Senior guard
Tymu Chenery tallied 18 points in 13 minutes. He went a perfect 8-for-8, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc to compliment an array of dunks and layups. Senior center
Nehemiah Benson hit 8-of-9 around the rim for 16 points and graduate point guard
Symir Torrence collected 10 assists in just 14 minutes of action. Torrence entered the game ranked seventh in the nation in assists and bumped his season average up to 7.2.
"I thought we came out focused and ready to go," head coach
Levell Sanders said. "I'm happy we had an opportunity to get a lot of guys some minutes. We have a long conference season coming up and you never know who you will need to step up so I'm glad we got these guys some extended minutes. I also liked the way we shared the ball today and how we got out in transition and ran. Now we turn our attention to America East play."Â
Sophomore guard
Masud Stewart (13 pts.) and freshmen guards
Max Sims (13 pts.) and
Evan Ashe (12 pts.) also reached double figures.Â
The Bearcats pulled down 54 rebounds, tying the program single-game record. The team's +29 rebound margin set the new standard and the 24 team assists tied the school record. The 108 team points represented the third-most in BU's 23 years of Division I, topped only by the 113-point showing against Elmira (12-30-17) and the 110 points against Hartwick (11-28-21).Â
Binghamton's eight non-conference wins is the second-most in its Division I tenure, eclipsed only by the 2016-17 and 2017-18 teams that won nine non-conference games each.Â
The Bearcats now have an 11-day layoff before opening conference play at Bryant on Jan. 11. The gap is due to a first-week bye BU drew in the America East schedule.Â
