FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior third baseman
Shelby Carvalho went 3-for-6 with a two-run home run and freshman pitcher
Brianna Roberts won her first collegiate start as Binghamton (1-1) split a pair of games in the opening day of the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament on Friday at the FGCU Softball Facility. After dropping the opener 8-0 to UNC-Greensboro (2-0) in five innings, the Bearcats regrouped and defeated the host Eagles (0-1) 7-5.
Carvalho, who hit safely in both games, also led the team with a pair of runs. Her two hits against Florida Gulf Coast tied her career high.
Roberts, meanwhile, went the distance against Florida Gulf Coast. In seven innings, she struck out eight batters.
Also going 3-for-6 on the day was sophomore outfielder
Alayna Harbaugh. She also drew a pair of walks to finish the day with a team-best .625 on-base percentage.
Carvalho's two-run blast keyed a four-run top of the fifth inning against Florida Gulf Coast that turned a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead. Senior second baseman
Alli Richmond tied the game on an RBI double and one batter later, senior designated player
Quinn DeCicco put the Bearcats ahead on a sacrifice fly. Carvalho then capped off the frame with her home run.
After the Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning, redshirt sophomore pinch hitter
Brianna Santos clubbed a solo home run, padding the Binghamton lead to 6-3.
Although Florida Gulf Coast homered twice against her, Roberts retired the final four batters of the game. The loss was tagged to Ally Hulme, whose record fell to 0-1.
"Game two was a great team win against a scrappy FGCU team," head coach
Jess Bump said. "We got down early, but really worked offensively to get some momentum and put pressure on, and
Brianna Roberts settled in to get some key outs when we needed them."
Earlier in the day, the Bearcats fell behind UNC-Greensboro 8-0 by the middle of the seventh inning. Graduate student pitcher
Sophia Pappas, however, pitched 4.0 innings in relief, did not allow an earned run and struck out a career-high eight batters.
For UNC-Greensboro, Jorde Chartland scattered one run on four hits and struck out seven batters to raise her record to 1-0. Junior pitcher
Allison L'Amoreaux was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 0-1.
Pappas also went 1-for-2 at the plate in the first game. Her fifth-inning double was the Bearcats' only extra-base hit against the Spartans.
Binghamton continues play at the FGCU Tournament on Saturday with games against LIU (10 a.m.) and Southern Illinois (2:30 p.m.).
