ALBANY, N.Y. – Binghamton (13-12, 6-6 AE) took first-place UAlbany (17-10, 11-2 AE) into overtime before losing 63-53 in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the McDonough Sports Complex. The defeat snapped the Bearcats' three-game winning streak.
Redshirt freshman guard
Jadyn Weltz led the Bearcats with 14 points. She also tied for the team high with eight rebounds and led Binghamton with three assists and five steals.
Senior forward
Clare Traeger finished with 11 points and tied Weltz for the lead in rebounds (eight). Freshman guard
Meghan Casey also had 11 points, which tied her career high.
In a game that featured three ties and six lead changes, the Bearcats were down 49-44 with 4:25 left in regulation. From there, however, they scored six of the next eight points to pull to within 51-50 with 1:27 left to go. Weltz capped the run with a pair of made free throws.
Neither team scored on their next possession and the Bearcats got the ball with 11 seconds left in the fourth period. Weltz hit the go-ahead layup with five seconds remaining, prompting the Great Danes to call a time out.
With 0.8 seconds left to go, Kayla Cooper - who finished with a game-high 17 points - drew a shooting foul. She hit the tying free throw but missed the winning attempt, sending the game in overtime.
In the extra period, the Great Danes outscored the Bearcats 11-1. They hit seven of their 12 free throws during that stretch.
"Everyone stepped up tonight and we knew we had to compete as a team," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "The first quarter was a little shaky but after that, we played well. We are disappointed that we didn't finish it in overtime but what a battle tonight."
Helene Haegerstrand scored 16 points in the winning effort. Also reaching double figures for the Great Danes were Ellen Hahne and Grace Heeps – each of whom ended up with 11 points.
Binghamton outscored Albany 30-20 in the paint but lost the rebounding battle 41-35. The Great Danes also outshot the Bearcats 42 percent (21-50) to 27 percent (18-of-65).
From the free throw line, the Bearcats made 17 of their 22 attempts (77 percent).
Binghamton travels to NJIT on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.
