NEWARK, N.J. – Alejandra Zuniga scored a game-high and career-best 31 points, powering NJIT (13-12, 8-5 AE) to a 75-70 win over Binghamton (13-13, 6-7 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday evening at the NJIT Wellness & Events Center.
Zuniga, who also finished with five assists and a pair of blocks, shot 10-for-18 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from beyond the three-point arc. She also made all eight of her free throw shots.
Senior guard
Denai Bowman led the Bearcats with 18 points, going 8-for-16 from the field in the process and canning a pair of free throws. Sophomore forward
Genevieve Coleman added 11 points.
Bowman now has 1,156Â points for her career and moves into 13th place all time in Binghamton program history. Against NJIT, she surpassed Erica Carter, who scored 1,150 points between 2006-10.
In a game that featured 14 lead changes and 11 ties, the Bearcats closed the first half with an 8-0 run in a span of 2:13 to take a 37-31 lead at the break. Freshman forward
Camryn Fauria, who finished with nine points, netted four of her points during that stretch.
In the third period, NJIT bounced back to tie the game at 40-40 on a jumper by Aria Myers with 6:47 remaining. From there, the lead swung back and fourth before the Bearcats took a 51-50 at the end of the period. Senior forward
Khoryn Bannis scored the go-ahead points on a pair of made free throws with nine seconds left to go.
The Highlanders took command of the game with 7-0 run in the first 1:56 of the fourth period. Zuniga had four of her points during that stretch.
Coleman pulled the Bearcats to within 71-70 on a pair of made free throws with 1:18 left in regulation. Zuniga, however, clinched the win on a jumper with 48 seconds remaining and a pair of free throws with seven seconds to go.
Trinity Williams added 16 points and 12 rebounds in the victory while Kenna Squier added 15 points and six rebounds. For the game, NJIT finished with a 38-30 rebounding advantage and a 42-36 edge in point in the paint.
"They outrebounded us tonight and they outhustled us and that's the name of the game," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We can't let a team keep going down low on us and their post players took control of the game."

Clare Traeger had eight points and seven rebounds.
Binghamton finished with a season-low six turnovers. The Bearcats also went 20-for-26 (76.9 percent) from the line, including 15-for-16 in the second half. In the fourth period alone, they made all nine of their free throw attempts.
Binghamton returns home to host UMass Lowell on Saturday at 2 p.m. It will be the Bearcats' annual Senior Day Game.
