Women’s Basketball Falls 62-55 to UMass Lowell on Senior Day

Trager nets 12 points, Weltz and Coleman add 11 points

VESTAL, N.Y. – Jaini Edmonds led a balanced attack with a game-high 17 points, lifting UMass Lowell (3-21, 2-12 AE) to a 62-55 win over Binghamton (13-14, 6-8 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The contest took place as part of the Bearcats' annual Senior Day Game.

Edmonds was one of four River Hawk players to reach double figures in scoring. She was followed by Ivory Finley (14 points), Amaya Dowdy (12 points) and Jaliena Sanchez (10 points). Dowdy also added six rebounds and a team-best four blocks.

Senior forward Clare Traeger, who was one of five Binghamton seniors honored during a pregame ceremony, led the Bearcats with 12 points and eight rebounds. She also added a pair of steals.

Sophomore forward Genevieve Coleman and redshirt freshman guard Jadyn Weltz each finished with 11 points. Weltz also dished out a game-high seven assists and recorded a game-high four steals.

Senior guard Denai Bowman, meanwhile, filled up the stat sheet with nine points, four assists, three rebounds, a steal and a game-high four blocks.

UMass Lowell took command of the game in the second period, finishing the first half with a 16-2 in the final 5:34 to take a 28-23 lead at the break. Edmonds had five of her points during that stretch.

The Bearcats were within 43-38 with 8:18 left in regulation but the River Hawks outscored them 12-6 over the next six minutes to go up 55-44 with 2:29 left in regulation. Dowdy led a balanced attack with four points during that span.

UMass Lowell clinched the win at the free throw line, making 11 of its 13 attempts in the fourth period. In the final 1:19 alone, the River Hawks were a perfect 6-for-6.

"UMass Lowell has been in every game against every top team and they are much better than their record shows," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Unfortunately tonight, they had to play really exceptional. They came out punching and swinging."

Bowman and Traeger are part of a senior class that has stayed together for the past four years. The other Bearcat seniors include guards Cassidy Roberts, Khoryn Bannis and Zahra Barnes.

"They are amazing young women," Shapiro Ord said. "The minute they stepped on to this campus, they changed this community in a great way. I am just really proud that I have been able to coach them because they have given so much."

Binghamton hosts Vermont on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
