Baseball drops opener at Clemson 11-3

Host Tigers score runs in first four innings to build lead; Haskell, Corry, Reifler collect two hits apiece

CLEMSON, S.C. - Host Clemson broke open the game with three runs in each of the third and fourth innings and the Tigers (1-0) dealt Binghamton baseball (0-1) an 11-3 loss in the opening game of the season Friday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The teams continue the weekend series with single games on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Clemson scored runs in each of the first four innings to build an 8-1 cushion. The ACC member Tigers hit three home runs and stole 11 bases to apply the offensive pressure.

Binghamton was only outhit 11-8 but each was a single and BU left five stranded to limit its production.

Sophomore center fielder Logan Haskell went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junior shortstop Isaiah Corry and junior left fielder Tommy Reifler each went 2-for-3 with Reifler scoring two of Binghamton's three runs. Haskell's single in the third inning cut BU's deficit to 2-1 before Clemson responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame and three more in the fourth to pull away.

Junior right fielder Mike Gunning delivered an RBI single in the eighth and senior first baseman Kevin Gsell accounted for the other run with a sacrifice fly in the same inning.

Bearcat relievers Kyle Eskildsen, Tommy Snyder and Tanner Sinicki combined to limit Clemson to one earned run over the final 4.2 innings. Eskildsen allowed two hits in 3.0 innings. Snyder struck out two in his 1.1 innings and Sinicki got the final out of the eighth to strand a runner.

The teams play the second game of the set at 2 p.m. Saturday.
