Baseball edged by Clemson 3-2

Bearcats outhit Tigers 9-6, carry lead into eighth inning in near-upset

CLEMSON, S.C. - Host Clemson (2-0) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally past Binghamton baseball (0-2) 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Bearcats outhit their ACC hosts 9-6 but came up short in the upset bid.

The Tigers were stifled on four hits over seven scoreless innings by Bearcat pitchers before striking in their final at-bat.

Down 3-1 in the ninth, Binghamton scored once and had the tying run on second with one out before back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.

Junior left fielder Tommy Reifler went 3-for-4 with an RBI and for the second straight day, produced a brilliant catch in the outfield. A day after robbing a Clemson home run over the wall in left, Reifler outdid that with an all-out diving catch going back to the wall in the sixth inning that saved a run. His throw back to second doubled off the runner and ended the threat. Reifler's Friday night catch was #10 on the SportsCenter Top 10 and yet his Saturday version was even better.

The teams played through five scoreless innings before BU broke out on top 1-0 in the sixth. Reifler led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by junior shortstop Isaiah Corry. Sophomore center fielder Logan Haskell singled to move Reifler to third and he scored on a wild pitch. The Bearcats missed a chance to add more runs after a strikeout and fly out stranded two on the base paths.

Junior starter Gabe Driscoll, meanwhile, was exceptional in his season debut. Driscoll limited the Tigers to two hits - both singles - in five shutout innings. He struck out four before giving way to junior John Lumpinski, who worked 1.2 scoreless innings.

Haskell went 2-for-5 and sophomore third baseman Devan Bade got on twice and scored a run.

The teams play the final game of the weekend series at noon Sunday.
