Softball Gains Split at Day Two of Furman Invitational

Bearcats bounce back from 2-0 loss to Sacred Heart, beat host Paladins 9-5

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sophomore outfielder Brianna Santos drove in three runs and fellow sophomore outfielder Laney Harbaugh scored three times, leading Binghamton (4-5) to a 9-5 win over the host Paladins (2-3) at the Furman Invitational on Saturday at the Pepsi Softball Stadium. With the victory, the Bearcats gain a split in the second day of the Furman Invitational, having lost 2-0 to Sacred Heart (2-2) earlier in the day.

Harbaugh finished the day batting a team-best .571 (4-for-7) and drove in a run. She has hit safely in all four games during the weekend and is now batting .346 for the season.

The three RBI for Santos represents her career high. She has now hit safely in four of the last five games and leads Binghamton with seven RBI so far this season.

Sophomore designated player/pitcher Lindsey Walter, sophomore outfielder Sarah Rende and junior first baseman Alex Musial each went 2-for-6 (.333) during the day.

The Bearcats trailed Furman 4-2 before coming up with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Rende and junior third baseman Shelby Carvalho started off the scoring in the frame with back-to-back RBI singles to tie the score at 4-4. Freshman pinch hitter Emma Lawson then put the Bearcats up 6-4 on a two-run single.

Binghamton then scored three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to go up 9-4. After Harbaugh delivered an RBI single, Santos drove home the final two runs of the frame on a base hit.

Walter, who started the game as the designated player, pitched the final 3.1 innings to record the win. Her record is 1-0. Sierra Tuffs took the loss, dropping her record to 1-2.

In the opener against Sacred Heart, graduate student pitcher Sophia Pappas struck out a career high 13 batters. That ties the fourth-highest, single-game total in Binghamton program history. It is the highest total by a Bearcat player since Cyrilla Suker had 15 strikeouts vs. Hartford on April 25, 2009.

Unfortunately, the Pioneers got a fourth-inning home run from Jenna Mowad to go up 1-0. Mowad also scored on a passed ball in the seventh inning, padding the lead to 2-0.

On the mound, Sam Kowalski tossed a four-hit shutout, raising her record to 2-0. Pappas, meanwhile, fell to 0-1.

"We rode the wave today," head coach Jessica Bump said. "We had a tough loss this morning but Sophia Pappas had a career game on the mound and we are super proud of her. In tonight's game against Furman, we put everything together. We had some clutch hits, good base running and we came up with some plays when we needed to. Our entire team had great energy in game two, and that's how we want to be playing all of the time."

Binghamton wraps up its weekend at the Furman Invitational with a Sunday game against Towson at 11:30 a.m.
