Softball shuts out Towson 2-0 in final day of Furman Invitational

Bearcats finish weekend 4-1, record second shutout

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Graduate student second baseman Alli Richmond clubbed a two-run home run, powering Binghamton (5-5) to a 2-0 win over Towson (3-2) in the final day of the Furman Invitational on Sunday at the Pepsi Softball Stadium. With the victory, the Bearcats conclude the weekend with a 4-1 record.

With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, junior first baseman Alex Musial singled into left field. One batter later, Richmond drilled a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence, giving the Bearcats all the runs they'd need. It was Richmond's first home run of the season and it also gave her three extra-base hits and four RBI in 2023.

Binghamton's pitching staff threw its second shutout of the weekend. Freshman Kendal Leitner got the start, going 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and striking out three batters. Her record is now 1-1. Sophomore Lindsey Walter went the final three innings, allowing just one hit to nail down her first save of the year.

Taking the loss for the Tigers was Maddie Gardner, whose record dropped to 1-1.

Walter also came through at the plate, going 2-for-3 against Towson for the Bearcats' only multiple-hit performance of the game.

"It's always good to travel home on Sunday with a win," head coach Jess Bump said. "We always talk about continuing to get better every day, and This weekend collectively was much better than the opening weekend. It will be nice to have a week off, regroup and work on some little things to take our game to the next level."

For the weekend, the Bearcat pitching staff held its opponents to a 1.03 ERA and .186 batting average. Walter was 1-0 in a pair of relief roles, going 5.2 innings with a 0.00 ERA and her save against Towson.

At the plate, Walter hit a team-best .467 (7-for-15) during the five games at Furman. Musial went 5-for-14 (.357).

Up next for Binghamton is the Hampton/Norfolk State Tournament March 3-5.

NOTE: Richmond has now hit two home runs in shutout victories during her career. She also homered in the Bearcats' 1-0 win over Hartford on April 30. 2022 … for the season, Walter leads Binghamton with a .429 batting average and a 1.97 ERA.
