WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Unbeaten No. 4 Wake Forest (7-0) scored three runs in the first inning and kept Binghamton baseball (0-4) at bay in a 6-0 result Friday night at Dave Couch Ballpark. The ACC power Demon Deacons were the highest-ranked regular-season opponent BU has faced in 13 years.Â
The Bearcats had an opportunity right of the gate with two runners in scoring position in the first inning. But Wake Forest made a defensive play from deep short to first to end the threat. The Deacons belted their NCAA-leading 21st home run in the bottom of the first and plated three runs on three hits to take control.Â
In the fourth inning, BU starter
Thomas Babalis was a strike away from no damage but a borderline call didn't go his way and Wake Forest used an ensuing two-out, two-run double to left field to pad its lead. The home team added a run in the sixth for the final margin.
Junior right fielder
Mike Gunning recorded BU's only hit of the game with a sharp single to left in the sixth inning. In the eighth, junior left fielder
Tommy Reifler sent a ball to the wall that was snared by the Wake Forest outfielder, denying Reifler a home run. In the ninth, BU loaded the bases before a strikeout ended the game.
Binghamton did hold the Demon Deacons to their lowest scoring output of the young season. Wake Forest leads the country in runs scored and home runs.Â
After four straight games against ACC opponents to start the season, BU will face Mt. St. Mary's (5-1) at 2 p.m. to continue the weekend in Winston-Salem. Junior
Gabe Driscoll (0.00 ERA) makes his second start of the season for the Bearcats.Â
