ARLINGTON, Va. - Host George Washington (4-11) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to rally past Binghamton baseball (4-7) 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field.Â
The Bearcats had taken a 3-2 lead when senior first baseman
Kevin Gsell belted a two-out, solo home run over the left field wall in the top of the ninth. It was Gsell's first home run of the season and completed a 3-for-3, 2 RBI day from the team captain.
But GW used two walks and two singles to walk it off - the tying single coming on a two-strike pitch and the final hit a two-out grounder up the middle.Â
Binghamton managed just five hits (three by Gsell) but was in position to win after starter
Gabe Driscoll (6 IP, 2 runs, 3K) and graduate
Tommy Snyder (2.0 ip, 1 hit, 3k) kept GW hitters at bay.Â
For the second straight day, BU scored in the first inning. Senior left fielder
Cavan Tully led off with a single, went to second on an outfield error and to third on a wild pitch. Tully scored when Gsell hit a sacrifice fly to center. The Bearcats made it 2-0 in the fourth when sophomore DH
Nick Roselli drew a walk and Gsell doubled. Gsell then went to third when Roselli was thrown out on a controversial call at the plate and sophomore third baseman
Devan Bade followed with an RBI groundout.Â
But GW countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a double and two groundouts and a tying run in the sixth on a two-out double and RBI single.Â
The teams play the rubber game at noon tomorrow. Â
