FAIRFAX, Va. – Binghamton (9-7) was swept 3-2 and 4-3 by George Mason (11-5) in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the GMU Softball Facility. The Bearcats held the lead in both games only to have the Patriots win twice in their final at-bat.
The defeats offset an impressive day at the plate by junior catcher
Hailey Ehlers. She went 4-for-5 (.800) with two doubles and four RBI. In the second game, Ehlers went a perfect 3-for-3.
Redshirt sophomore third baseman
Brianna Santos opened the scoring when she drove in a run in the top of the first inning. Although she reached on an error, Santos was credited with her team-high 14 RBI of the season on the play.
Three innings later, Ehlers made it 2-0 on an RBI double.
Freshman pitcher
Brianna Roberts was pitching a two-hit shutout entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Up to that point, she had struck out seven batters and had not issued a walk.
In the final frame, however, the Patriots got back-to-back hits off Roberts. Walter came into pitch but Nicole Bechtel tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run double. Two batters later, Elyssa DeRosa single home the winning run.
Aly Rayle went the distance in game one against Binghamton, scattering two runs on four hits and striking out six batters. Her record is now 2-1. Walter took the loss for Binghamton, dropping her record to 2-1.
In game two, Ehlers drove in all the Bearcat runs on a three-run double in the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, however, George Mason got all of those runs back on a pair of RBI singles and a bases-loaded walk.
Binghamton had a golden opportunity to take back the lead in the top of the sixth inning but left runners on second and third base at the end of the frame. In the bottom of that same inning, Hayley Shifflet singled home the go-ahead run for the Patriots.
The Bearcats then left the tying run on second base when the game ended in the top of the seventh inning.
Jordan Anderson, who came on in relief following Ehlers' three-run double, pitched 5.2 scoreless innings to improve her record to 2-0. Graduate student pitcher
Sophia Pappas, meanwhile, was tagged with the loss as her record fell to 0-2.
The three hits in the second game by Ehlers ties her career high, which she set against Georgia Southern on Feb. 11, 2022. The three RBI in that same game, meanwhile, set her career high.
Sophomore outfielder
Sarah Rende was 1-for-5 but also drew a pair of walks for a .429 on-base percentage.
Binghamton and George Mason square off on Sunday in another doubleheader. Start time has been pushed up to 10 a.m. due to the impending weather conditionsÂ
