Softball Sweeps George Mason 6-4 and 13-5

Santos drives in six runs, Richmond and Ehlers add three RBI

FAIRFAX, Va. – Redshirt sophomore third baseman Brianna Santos had six RBI while graduate student second baseman Alli Richmond and junior catcher Hailey Ehlers each drove in three runs, powering Binghamton (11-7) to a 6-4, 13-5 sweep over George Mason (11-7) in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at the GMU Softball Facility. With the victories, the Bearcats split the four-game weekend series against the Patriots and have now won eight of their last 10 games.

Santos, who now has a team-best 20 RBI this season, had two of her RBI in the first game and a career-high four in the second game. For the day, she went 4-for-7 (.571).

Ehlers went 4-for-8 (.500) with a triple and a home run. She drove in all of her runs in the second game.

Richmond, meanwhile, also did all of her damage in the second game. In the process, she tied her career high with three RBI.

Leading the Bearcats at the plate, however, was redshirt sophomore utility player Lindsey Walter, who was 5-for-8 (.625) and scored five runs. She also pitched a pair of scoreless innings in the second game.

Santos opened the scoring in the first game with a two-run single in the top of the first inning. The Patriots, however, came back with three runs in the bottom of the same inning to go up 3-2.

Binghamton got the separation it needed with four runs in the top of the second inning to go up 6-3. Walter had an RBI single and sophomore outfielder Sarah Rende stroked a two-run double during that frame. Santos, Walter and Ehlers each scored a run during that stretch.

Freshman pitcher Brianna Roberts took over from there, allowing just one run over the next 5.1 innings. She then handed the ball over to graduate student pitcher Sophia Pappas, who proceeded to get the final two outs. Roberts is now 4-1 this season while Pappas now has a pair of saves.

The loss was tagged to Carly Cooper, whose record fell to 2-3.

In the second game, Binghamton trailed 5-4 heading into the top of the sixth inning. Santos had driven in all of the Bearcat runs to that point – with a two-run triple in the third inning and a two-run single in the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth inning, however, the Bearcats blew the game open with eight runs to go up 12-5. Ehlers led off the inning with a home run and then ended the scoring with a two-run triple. In between her at-bats, Richmond provided the big blow with a three-run double.

One inning later, redshirt sophomore pinch hitter Gabby Guerrero doubled home Walter with the final run of the game.

Pappas came on in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Bearcats down 5-2. She tossed a pair of scoreless innings and was credited with the win. Her record is now 1-2.

Taking the loss was Aly Rayle, who is now 2-3.

The eight runs scored in the sixth inning of the second game represents the Bearcats' highest single-inning total since also scoring eight runs against UMass Lowell on May 1, 2021. Binghamton won that game 11-5.

Ehlers finished the four-game series against George Mason with a team-best .615 bating average (8-for-13). She hit two doubles, a triple as well as a home run and had 6 RBI. In the process, Ehlers raised her season average to .378. Her slugging percentage for the weekend was 1.154.

Walter, meanwhile, went 6-for-12 at the plate (.500) during the four games to raise her batting average to a team-best .488.

Binghamton heads to the Penn State Tournament next Saturday-Sunday.
