Baseball sweeps DH from Lafayette, 5-4 and 14-6

Bearcats stretch win streak to four, have won seven of last nine

VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior outfielder Tommy Reifler went 7-for-10 to pace Binghamton baseball (7-6) in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Lafayette (3-16) Saturday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Stadium. BU walked off the seven-inning opener 5-4 and then ramped up the offense in a 14-6 nightcap win. With the three-game weekend sweep, BU has now won four in a row and seven of their last nine.

In the opener, the Bearcats snapped a 4-4 tie with the winning run in their final at-bat. Senior first baseman Kevin Gsell led off the bottom of the seventh with a double off the wall in left center. Sophomore third baseman Devan Bade put down a sacrifice bunt and two batters later, pinch hitter Logan Haskell dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt to plate Gsell for the 5-4 win.

Graduate reliever Tommy Snyder (W, 1-0) notched the win with 2.0 scoreless innings and the Bearcats escaped despite stranding 11 runners and surrendering the lead in the sixth inning.

Binghamton trailed 2-0 before plating four runs in the fifth inning. The Bearcats used three infield singles and a double to chase the Leopards starter and take the lead. The big blow was a two-run double from Gsell, who went 4-for-4 with two RBI in the game. Reifler went 3-for-4 and senior left fielder Cavan Tully added two hits.

Junior starter Gabe Driscoll went 5.0 innings and scattered five hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in a no-decision.

In Game two, BU scored runs in seven of the eight innings to earn the lopsided win. Lafayette cut its margin to 7-5 with three runs in the sixth inning before BU cranked up the offense again with seven runs over its final three frames.

Junior DH Mike Gunning went 3-for-4 with his first home run as a Bearcat and three RBI. Reifler, meanwhile, finished off a 10-for-14 series (.714) with a 4-for-6, 3-RBI showing. Bade went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Tully added two more hits to his total.

Senior starter Ryan Bryggman (W, 2-2) went 5.2 innings and struck out seven.

The game featured a combined 27 hits (11 extra-base hits) and only one inning (5th) where neither team scored a run.

After the three-game series sweep, Reifler raised his season average to .462 and Tully moved his to .429.

The Bearcats play at Big Ten member Penn State on Tuesday before hosting UMass Lowell in the America East opening series next weekend.
