Baseball sweeps UML, 6-5 and 8-5, takes weekend series

Bade hits two home runs and Gunning drives in four; Driscoll improves to 3-0 as BU starts AE play 3-0

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (11-8, 3-0 America East) kept rolling with a doubleheader sweep of visiting UMass Lowell (3-17, 0-3 AE) Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Complex.

The Bearcats won 6-5 and 8-5 to complete a three-game weekend sweep of the River Hawks. It was a rematch of last spring's America East championship game, which BU won for its fifth conference crown. Binghamton has now won seven of the last eight and is 6-0 at home to start the 2023 slate.

In the opener, BU shook off an early 2-0 deficit with runs in three straight innings. Up 6-2, the Bearcats then held on after UML scored three runs in the seventh. Junior starter Gabe Driscoll (W, 3-0) worked 6.2 innings and scattered six hits and four earned runs before senior closer Jack Collins induced a fly out to center with the bases loaded to save the win.

Junior DH Mike Gunning (2-for-2, 4 RBI) gave BU the lead for good in the third inning. With runners on first and second, Gunning drilled a shot off the wall in right center for a two-run triple and a 3-2 lead. One inning later, Gunning hit a two-run single on a 3-2 pitch to make it 6-2. Senior left fielder Cavan Tully went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and sophomore third baseman Devan Bade belted a solo home run to center field in the second inning.

In Game 2, UML struck for two runs in the first but the Bearcats answered with four in the bottom of the frame. Tully led off with deep drive to right center. Three batters later, senior first baseman Kevin Gsell collected an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. Bade followed with his second blast of the afternoon - a two-run shot to left center that made it 4-2.

In the second inning, junior right fielder Tommy Reifler legged out a one-out triple and then scored on a wild pitch to put BU up 5-2.

The River Hawks got two back in the fifth but BU aswered with three runs on four hits in the seventh. Freshman shortstop Mike Stellrecht led off with a double down the right field line. After a Tully sacrifice, Reifler produced an RBI single and two batters later, Gsell plated another with an RBI single. Sophomore third baseman Nick Roselli finished BU's scoring with a two-out rBI single to left.

UML score a run in the ninth and had the tying run in the on-deck circle before graduate reliever Tommy Snyder ended it with a fly ball to right. Snyder earned his first save as a Bearcat with four strong innings in relief of senior starter Ryan Bryggman (W, 5 IP).

Gsell went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Bade collected two RBI and both Tully and Reifler had two hits and an RBI at the top of the order. Reifler (.418) and Tully (.405) are 1-2 among all America East starting players in batting.

Binghamton travels to Buffalo for a Tuesday afternoon non-conference game at Canisius.
