Baseball rolls over Bryant 16-1 to open weekend series

BU compiles 16 hits to win battle of unbeatens, remains perfect at home this spring (7-0)

VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior right fielder Tommy Reifler went 4-for-6 with 2 RBI and sophomore third baseman Devan Bade belted a 3-run home run to lead a big offensive attack as Binghamton baseball (12-9, 4-0 America East) kept two win streaks alive with a 16-1 trouncing of Bryant (11-10, 3-1 AE) Friday night at the Bearcats Baseball Complex. With the win, BU remained unbeaten in conference play and also perfect at home in 2023 (7-0).

Reifler raised his league-leading average to .438 with another productive game. He got things started in the first with a one-out single and after another single by senior first baseman Kevin Gsell, both came around to score when Bade connected for his team-leading fifth home run of the season.

Ahead 3-0, BU kept up the attack with two runs in the third, one in the fifth, eight in the sixth and two final runs in the eighth. Bryant put its lone run on the board with a solo home run in the seventh.

Senior starter Thomas Babalis (W, 2-2) pitched 7.0 innings and allowed just five hits. He struck out seven and didn't walk a batter. Junior Alex Henderson worked the final two scoreless innings.

Already up 6-0, BU broke the game open with eight runs on four hits in the sixth inning. Reifler hit his first home run of the season to start the barrage and sophomore center fielder Logan Haskell and senior left fielder Cavan Tully each had a two-run single in the outburst. In the eighth, Reifler added an RBI single to his total.

Bade went 2-for-3 with three RBI, Haskell also drove in three and Gsell went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

With Sunday's weather looking ominous, the teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
