Baseball sweeps pair from Norfolk State

Bearcats win 6-3 and 7-0; final game of series set for noon on Sunday

NORFOLK, Va. – Binghamton (3-5) swept a doubleheader from host Norfolk State (1-8), winning 6-3 and 7-0  Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

In the opener, sophomore second baseman Nick Roselli delivered a two-out, two-run single in the top of the ninth to snap a 3-3 tie and senior closer Jack Collins struck out two in the bottom of the inning to save it.

The Bearcats jumped ahead with two runs in the second inning. Norfolk countered with single runs in the third and fifth innings to tie it 2-2. The teams then traded runs in the seventh (BU) and eighth (Norfolk) before Binghamton made its final surge in the ninth.

In that deciding frame, junior left fielder Tommy Reifler led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by junior shortstop Isaiah Corry. After a fly out, sophomore center fielder Logan Haskell and junior right fielder Mike Gunning drew back-to-back singles to load the bases. Roselli then sent a base hit to right center, scoring Reifler and Haskell. Gunning then scored on an ensuing infield error, providing the final margin.

Corry went 2-for-3 with two RBI and sophomore third baseman Devan Bade added two hits.

Junior reliever Kyle Eskildsen got the win after pitching two scoreless innings in relief of senior starter Thomas Babalis (6 IP, 2 runs).

In the seven-inning nightcap, BU struck for five runs in the third inning and junior Gabe Driscoll pitched 5.2 scoreless innings. Driscoll struck out six and scattered six hits.

Junior catcher Kevin Reilly went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Reifler and Gunning each had two hits and an RBI.

Already ahead 1-0, BU plated five runs on four hits in the third inning to open up a cushion. Reilly, junior DH Andrew Tan and Reifler each had RBI hits and two more runs scored on an outfield error.

The teams will finish up the weekend series with a single game at noon Sunday. Senior Ryan Bryggman makes his third start of the spring.
