Baseball falls in extra innings to Norfolk State 6-5

Bearcats one out away from weekend sweep before hosts rally to win in 10th inning

NORFOLK, Va. - Host Norfolk State (2-8) tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and then plated the winning run in the 10th to defeat Binghamton baseball (3-6) 6-5 Sunday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field. The Bearcats claimed two wins on Saturday and were one out away from a weekend sweep before the Spartans rallied.

The game featured six lead changes with NSU getting the final say in the 10th after a leadoff double, groundout and RBI single.

Binghamton had taken a 5-4 lead with a run in the eighth inning. With one out, sophomore second baseman Nick Roselli tripled to right center and three batters later, sophomore third baseman Devan Bade delivered a two-out RBI single through the right side.

But Norfolk State struck in the bottom of the ninth after two outs were recorded. They used a single, stolen base, passed ball and infield single to tie it 5-5 and force extra innings.

Senior first baseman Kevin Gsell went 3-for-4 with two doubles, Bade went 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Junior left fielder Tommy Reifler and senior DH Cavan Tully each drove in a run.

Graduate reliever Tommy Snyder worked 1.2 scoreless innings and was in line for the win before NSU rallied.

The Bearcats play a three-game set against George Washington next weekend in Arlington, Va.
