Softball Loses 3-1 at UMBC

Retrievers hit walk-off, three-run home run to take first game of series

BALTIMORE, Md. – Lyndsey Evex clubbed a walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, powering UMBC (11-9, 3-0 AE) to a 3-1 win over Binghamton (14-8, 2-1 AE) in an America East softball game on Saturday afternoon at The Diamond at UMBC. The loss snapped the Bearcats' five-game winning streak.

The Bearcats were two outs away from taking the series opener when Jerzie Nutile and Courtney Coppersmith had back-to-back infield singles in the bottom of the seventh inning. That set the stage for Evex, who drilled the first pitch over the left-center field fence.

The first five innings of the game featured a pitchers' duel between freshman Brianna Roberts and Kya Matter of UMBC. The only run during that stretch – which was unearned – came when graduate student second baseman Alli Richmond scored on a fielding error in the top of the fourth inning.

Redshirt sophomore Lindsey Walter came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning and retired the first four batters she faced. In the end, however, she was tagged with the loss as her record fell to 4-2.

Matter, meanwhile, went the distance and improved to 6-4 for the season.

Richmond went 2-for-3 during the game.

Walter, who entered the game leading the conference in batting (.520), went 1-for-3. In the process, she extended her hitting streak to six games.

With her five shutout innings against UMBC, Roberts has now allowed just two runs in her last 14.1 innings of work. Her ERA for the season is now 2.75.

Binghamton and UMBC conclude their series with a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
