BALTIMORE, MD. – Binghamton (14-10, 2-3 AE) was swept by UMBC (13-9, 5-0 AE) 3-2 and 3-2 in an America East softball doubleheader on Sunday at The Diamond at UMBC. As was the case in Saturday's series opener, the Bearcats took the lead in both games on Sunday only to have the three-time defending conference champions rally for the victories.
Redshirt sophomore
Brianna Santos led the Bearcats by going 4-for-6 at the plate (.667) with a double and a home run. In the process, she extended her hitting streak to a career-best eight games.
On the mound, graduate student pitcher
Sophia Pappas went 8.1 innings between the two games, allowed just one earned run and struck out 15 batters.
The first game was shaping up to be a slugfest as the two teams were tied at 2-2 through two innings of play. Santos belted a solo home run in the top of the first inning and one inning later, graduate student second baseman
Alli Richmond led off the frame with her third home run of the year.
The final run of the game, however, came courtesy of a solo home run by UMBC's Ashley DellaGuardia in the bottom of the third inning.
From there, Courtney Coppersmith retired 12 of the final 13 batters she'd face to lock up the win. She struck out 12 batters and raised her record to 2-1.
The loss was tagged to freshman pitcher
Brianna Roberts, who went the first 4.2 innings. Her record fell to 5-2.
Sophia Pappas tossed a perfect 2.0 innings in relief during the first game. She struck out four batters in the process.
Sophomore outfielder
Laney Harbaugh opened the scoring in the second game with an RBI groundout in the top of the fourth inning. The Retrievers, however, answered with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the same inning as well as an additional run one inning later.
The Bearcats then loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth inning. Their only run during that frame, however, came when junior pinch hitter
Allison L'Amoreaux drew a bases-loaded walk, trimming the deficit to 3-2.
Kya Matter held the Bearcats to just four hits and struck out eight batters. Her record is now 6-3.
In the nightcap, Pappas went the full 6.0 innings, striking out 11 batters. It marked the second time this season she has struck out 10+ batters in a game. Although two of the three runs she allowed were unearned, she took the loss and is now 1-3 so far this season.
Santos hit a team-best 5-for-8 (.625) during the three-game series with a double and her home run. For the season, she now has a team-best 23 RBI.
Richmond hit .375 (3-for-8) while Harbaugh was 3-for-10 (.300).
Binghamton heads to Siena on Thursday for a 2 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
