VESTAL, N.Y. – Redshirt sophomore third baseman
Brianna Santos, fellow redshirt sophomore second baseman
Gabby Guerrero and freshman shortstop
Akira Kopec each drove in three runs as Binghamton (21-13) gained a split against Syracuse (15-22-1) in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats lost the opener 4-2 but bounced back to win the nightcap 12-3 in five innings.
Santos, who now has a conference-best 32 RBI so far this season, had an RBI double in the first game and a two-run single in the second game. Guerrero belted a three-run home run in the second game while Kopec's three-run double was the walk-off hit the Bearcats needed to end the nightcap.
The Bearcats got all their runs in the second game during the final two innings of play. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, freshman pinch hitter
Emma Lawson belted a two-out, two-run single. One batter later, Guerrero hit her three-run home over the left field fence.
The Orange got a pair of runs back in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Tessa Galipeau.
The Bearcats, however, came back with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to finish the game. Santos started the scoring with her two-run single and graduate student designated player
Sophia Pappas followed with an RBI double. After junior catcher
Hailey Ehlers single home another run, Kopec stroked her walk-off double to the center field fence.
Redshirt sophomore pitcher
Lindsey Walter went the distance for the victory, improving her record to 5-2. The loss was tagged to Lindsey Hendrix, whose record fell to 5-12.
The 12 runs scored by the Bearcats represents the second time over the past five games that they have reached double figures in scoring.
In the opener, the Bearcats were down 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning when Santos belted her RBI double. Ehlers then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI single. Sophomore outfielder
Laney Harbaugh, who finished the day 2-for-5 and now has a team-best six-game hitting streak, scored both of the runs.
Syracuse came back with the go-ahead runs in the top of the fifth inning on RBI singles by Madison Knight and Laila Alves.
Knight, who was also the pitcher, then held the Bearcats hitless over the final three innings of the game, raising her record to 8-7. Pappas took the loss, dropping her record to 2-5.
At the plate, Pappas hit a team-best .667 (2-for-3) on the day with a pair of doubles. She also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch to finish with a .800 on-base percentage and 1.333 slugging percentage.
Ehlers was 2-for-4 (.500) while Santos and sophomore outfielder
