Softball Beats UMass Lowell 6-3 in AE Series Opener

Pappas drives in pair of runs, pitches complete-game victory

VESTAL, N.Y. – Graduate student pitcher Sophia Pappas recorded a complete-game victory and had two RBI, leading Binghamton (22-13, 8-4 AE) to a 6-3 win over UMass Lowell (15-22-1, 5-7 AE) in an America East softball game on Friday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex Softball Facility. The victory is the Bearcats' eighth in their past 11 games as well as their fifth straight conference win.

Pappas, who improved to 3-5 for the season, scattered three runs on eight hits, struck out nine batters and did not issue a walk. At the plate, she was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and scored once in addition to driving in the two runs. In the process, Pappas extended her hitting streak to six games.

Junior first baseman Allison L'Amoreaux was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while redshirt sophomore third baseman Brianna Santos was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Santos now has a conference-best 33 RBI so far this season.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, the Bearcats reeled off three runs – all of which were unearned. Santos tied the game on an RBI single and L'Amoreaux followed with an RBI on a sacrifice bunt. Pappas completed the scoring with a double that scored Santos from second base.

L'Amoreaux padded the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Pappas doubled home the Bearcats' fifth run of the game. She scored one batter later courtesy of a fielding error.

Morgan Fisher of UMass Lowell trimmed the deficit to 6-3 with a two-run double in the top of the fifth inning. Pappas, however, was able to get out of jam in the sixth inning and completed the game by striking out the side in the seventh inning.

"UMass Lowell is a great offensive team and they came out and scored early," head coach Jess Bump said. "But I was very happy with how our girls responded. Our at-bats at the beginning of the game were very good and Sophia did a great job on the mound today and helped herself at bat. It was a total team effort today."

The loss was tagged to Giana LaCedra, whose record fell to 8-5.

Sophomore outfielder Laney Harbaugh scored a pair of runs in the victory. Fellow sophomore outfielder Sarah Rende was 1-for-3, scored a run and extended her current hitting streak to six games.

Binghamton and UMass Lowell complete their weekend series on Saturday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader. Prior to the game, the Bearcats will hold their annual Senior Day ceremony. This year's honorees include Pappas, Alli Richmond, Jill Fittry, Quinn DeCicco and Chloe Morgan.
