Softball Sweeps UMass Lowell 13-4 and 8-2 on Senior Day

Bearcats hit .452 on the day, have now won 10 of last 13 games

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton (24-13, 10-4 AE) broke out the bats on Senior Day against UMass Lowell (15-24-1, 5-9 AE) on Saturday, recording a 13-4, 8-2 sweep in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victories, the Bearcats also sweep the three-game weekend series against the River Hawks and have now won 10 of their last 13 games.

In addition to scoring 21 runs in the two games, the Bearcats pounded out 28 hits - including nine extra-bases hits and three home runs. As a team, the Bearcats hit .452.

Sophomore outfielder Sarah Rende and redshirt sophomore third baseman Brianna Santos each drove in a team-best four runs on the day. Rende was one of three Bearcat players to homer, along senior catcher Quinn DeCicco and junior first baseman Allison L'Amoreaux.

Graduate student second baseman Alli Richmond hit a team-best .714, going 5-for-7 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Rende hit .600 (3-for-5) while sophomore outfielder Laney Harbaugh was 5-for-9 (.555).

All five graduating seniors made an impact during the doubleheader. In addition to Richmond and DeCicco, senior pinch hitter Chloe Morgan went a perfect 2-for-2 (1.000) while senior outfielder Jill Fittry – who was the flex player in both games – scored twice as a pinch runner. Graduate student pitcher Sophia Pappas, meanwhile, recorded her second straight complete-game victory in as many days.

"All weekend we just came out and we had a lot of fun," head coach Jess Bump said. "We are playing fearless right now and I think our good results are coming from that. I am super proud of our seniors. I was really proud of the way each of them played today."

Nursing a 1-0 lead in the opener, Binghamton reeled off six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Santos roped an RBI double, Pappas had a two-run single and DeCicco capped off the frame with a three-run home run over the center field fence.

The River Hawks came back with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Mya Case highlighted the frame with a two-run double.

The Bearcats, however, were able to finish off the game with six more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Richmond started the scoring with a two-run double and Harbaugh recorded an RBI single. Rende then ended the game with a three-run home run over the left field fence.

Redshirt sophomore pitcher Lindsey Walter went the distance to improve to 6-2 on the season. She held the River Hawks hitless through the first 4.1 innings.

The loss was tagged to Rylie White, whose record fell to 5-4.

The 17 hits by Binghamton in the first game represented its highest total of the season. Harbaugh, meanwhile, had four hits in the first game, which was the highest total by a Binghamton player this year.

In the nightcap, Binghamton was down 1-0 but reeled off four runs in the bottom of the third inning. L'Amoreaux capped the frame with a two-run home run.

After the River Hawks got a run back in the top of the fourth inning, the Bearcats scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 6-2. Santos then completed the scoring with a two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Pappas improved to 4-5 with the win in the second game. She scattered two runs on four hits, issued just one walk and struck out seven batters. For the weekend, she was 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA and recorded 16 strikeouts.

Taking the loss in the second game was Emily Reid, whose record is now 1-5.

Walter, who is now batting a conference-best .479 this season, went 4-for-8 during the doubleheader. She also tied Rende for the team lead with a .500 batting average for the three-game series against the River Hawks.

Santos finished the weekend with 5 RBI while L'Amoreaux drove in four runs. For the season, Santos now has 37 RBI, which is the highest total by a Binghamton player since 2016.

Binghamton as a team hit .405 during the three-game weekend series against UMass Lowell.

Up next for Binghamton is a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday against Army at 2:30 p.m. It will mark the Bearcats' final home date of the season.

NOTE: The attendance of 596 for Saturday's doubleheader set the facility record at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The old mark of 536 was set against Maine back on April 30, 2017.
