Baseball sweeps Hartford, extends win streak

Bearcats win 2-1 and 11-0 to complete series sweep; have now won 13 of last 16

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (17-10) condensed its scoring to four innings in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Hartford (2-20) Saturday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Complex. BU won 2-1 and 11-0 in a pair of seven-inning games against its former conference foe. The wins extended BU's win streak to five and gave them 13 wins in their last 16 games.

In the opener, the Bearcats snapped a 1-1 tie with the deciding run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, senior left fielder Cavan Tully drew a walk, junior center fielder Tommy Reifler singled and junior right fielder Mike Gunning plated Tully with a double to left field.

Junior starter Gabe Driscoll (W, 4-0) finished his 6.0 strong innings by striking out the side in the sixth. Senior closer Jack Collins navigated the final three outs for his fourth save of the season. Driscoll fanned seven and scattered four hits and one run. He leads the America East with a 2.64 ERA.

The game also featured the season debut of all-conference catcher Evin Sullivan, back in the lineup after an injury cost him the first seven weeks of the season. Sullivan made a splash in his first at-bat with a two-out RBI single that scored classmate Nick Roselli, who had singled with two outs and moved to second on a balk.

The Bearcats collected five hits - by five different players.

In the second game, BU scored seven runs in the first inning and four in the fourth to account for the scoring. The cushion was more than enough for senior Ryan Bryggman (W, 4-2), who went 5.0 innings and limited the Hawks to three hits with three strikeouts. Four relievers split the final two scoreless and hitless innings.

Roselli went 3-for-3 with four RBI in the game, raising his season average to .330 and bumping his team-high RBI count to 27 in 27 games. Roselli plated three of the four runs in the fourth with a bases-clearing double down the left field line. Earlier, BU battled around and scored seven runs on seven hits in the first inning. Back-to-back two-out, two-run doubles by junior shortstop Isaiah Corry and Tully capped off the barrage.

Sophomore Devan Bade went 3-for-3 with two RBI, Corry had two hits and two RBI and BU racked up 12 hits.

Binghamton hosts Cornell Tuesday night.
