VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman pitcher
Brianna Roberts struck out a career-high 12 batters and recorded her sixth victory of the season, highlighting Binghamton's split against UAlbany in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex Softball Facility. The Bearcats (16-12, 3-4 AE) won the opener 4-2 but the Great Danes took the finale 5-2.
Roberts scattered two runs on three hits and issued just one walk over the full seven innings. She did not allow a hit through the first five innings of play and improved to 6-2 on the season. Roberts also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Redshirt sophomore utility player
Lindsey Walter once again led the Bearcats in hitting, going a team-best .600 (3-for-5) during the two games. She also drew a pair of walks to finish with an on-base percentage of .714. Her batting average is now a team-best .493 this season.
The Bearcats gave Roberts a three-run cushion in the bottom of the third inning of the first game. Sophomore outfielder
Sarah Rende belted a two-run double and scored two batters later on an RBI single by graduate student second baseman
Alli Richmond.
The Great Danes got a pair of runs back in the top of the sixth inning, but redshirt sophomore pinch runner
Gabby Guerrero scored an insurance run in the bottom of the same inning.
The Bearcats pounded out 12 hits against UAlbany pitcher Wendi Hammond, whose record dropped to 7-6. Richmond, Walter and sophomore outfielder
Laney Harbaugh also recorded a pair of hits.
The tables were turned in the second game, however, as Kate Powers held the Bearcats to just two runs on six hits. The reigning America East Pitcher of the Week improved her record to 4-1.
Offensively, the Great Danes got a pair of RBI from both Morgan Petty and Sierra Fretz.
Already up 1-0, UAlbany broke the game open with three runs in the top of the third inning. Fretz had the key hit, stroking a two-run single.
The Bearcats got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman pinch hitter
Emma Lawson drilled an RBI double. When the relay throw by the Great Danes was dropped, a second run scored on the same play.
Powers got out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth inning and Petty drilled a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning. The Bearcats then went down in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The loss was tagged to junior pitcher
Allison L'Amoreaux, who record fell to 3-3.
Lawson went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate in a pinch-hitting role. Junior catcher
Hailey Ehlers went 2-for-6 (.333) on the day.
As a team, Binghamton hit .333 during the doubleheader.
The Bearcats and Great Danes conclude their weekend series with a noon game on Sunday.
NOTE: The attendance of 401 fans marked the third-highest total in the 10-year history of the Bearcats Sports Complex Softball Facility.
