Softball Beats UAlbany 3-2, Takes Weekend Series

Richmond belts two-run double in bottom of the sixth inning

VESTAL, N.Y. – Graduate student second baseman Alli Richmond hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning, lifting Binghamton (17-12, 4-4 AE) to a 3-2 win over UAlbany (12-12, 4-3 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats win the weekend series two games to one, having split Saturday's doubleheader.

Richmond, who finished the weekend 3-for-10 (.300) with three RBI, drilled her two-run double to center field with two outs in the frame. Scoring on the play were sophomore outfielders Sarah Rende and Laney Harbaugh.

The Great Danes threatened in the top of the seventh inning, with runners on first and third base with two outs. Junior catcher Hailey Ehlers, however, made a perfect throw to Richmond who caught UAlbany's Morgan Petty stealing second base.

"This series win shows all the hard work out team has been putting in this year," head coach Jess Bump said. "Even last year, we were doing a lot of work to really flip the switch and change the mentality of the program. This series win is great for us."

As was the case in Saturday's first game, Sunday's contest was shaping up to be a pitcher's duel between freshman Brianna Roberts and Wendi Hammond of Albany.

Through the first five innings, the game was deadlocked at 1-1. Roberts allowed an unearned run in the top of the third inning, but redshirt sophomore utility player Brianna Santos tied the game on a RBI single. Rende scored on the play.

Petty led off the top of the sixth inning with a home run, putting the Great Danes back up 2-1. Roberts, however, was able work her way out of a jam later in the frame, setting the stage for Richmond's heroics.

Richmond finished the series 3-for-10 (.300) with three RBI. She drove in the winning run in both of the Bearcats' victories. For the season, Richmond now has 19 RBI.

Roberts, meanwhile, was a perfect 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA. She finished the weekend with 14 strikeouts and is now 7-2 this season. Hammond's record dropped to 7-7.

Harbaugh finished the weekend 4-for-11 (.363) while Rende was 3-for-10 (.300), scored three times and had a pair of RBI.

Redshirt sophomore utility player Lindsey Walter, meanwhile, hit a team-best .500 during the weekend (4-for-8). Her batting average for the year is now a team-best .486.

Up next for the Bearcats is a three-game weekend series next Saturday-Sunday at Bryant.
