Box Score 2 SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Redshirt sophomore third baseman
Brianna Santos had five RBI and graduate student pitcher
Sophia Pappas threw a one-hit shutout, highlighting Binghamton's sweep over Bryant in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Conaty Park. The Bearcats (19-12, 6-4 AE) won the opener 17-2 in five innings and shut out the Bulldogs (11-22, 3-7 AE) in the nightcap.
Binghamton has now won three straight games as well as four of its last five contests. Since returning from its series at UMBC two weeks ago, the Bearcats are 5-2.
Santos, who was one of three Bearcat players to homer in the first game, went 5-for-6 on the day (.833). She now has a team-best 29 RBI so far this season, which is already the highest total by a Binghamton player since 2019.
Pappas, meanwhile, recorded her first career shutout in the second game. She allowed only two baserunners, recorded six strikeouts and retired the final 13 batters of the game.
Redshirt sophomore designated player
Lindsey Walter also went 5-for-6 (.833) during the two games and scored five runs. In the process, she extended her hitting streak to eight games and is now batting a conference-best .513 so far this season.
Freshman shortstop
Akira Kopec, meanwhile, reached base all six times she came up to bat. She was a perfect 4-for-4 (1.000), drew a pair of walks and scored three times.
Roberts opened the scoring in the first game, drilling a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. Bryant got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the first inning, but the Bearcats responded with three more runs in the top of the third inning. Junior first baseman
Allison L'Amoreaux delivered the big blow of the frame with a two-run home run.
The Bearcats got another two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Santos drew a bases-loaded walk during the frame to record her career-best fourth RBI of the game.
In the top of the fifth inning, Binghamton blew the game open with nine more runs to go up 17-2. Sophomore outfielder
Sarah Rende belted a grand slam during the frame and junior pinch hitter
Shelby Carvalho had a two-run double. Rende became the first Binghamton player to hit a grand slam since current senior catcher Quinn DeCiccco against Monmouth on March 19, 2022.
On the mound,
Brianna Roberts improved to 8-2. She went all five innings of the first game, scattering the two runs on four hits, striking out nine batters and not allowing a walk.
The loss was tagged to Brooke Tracy, whose record dropped to 1-6.
The 17 runs scored by Binghamton in the first game is its highest total since scoring 28 runs against St. Peter's back on March 25, 2018. The Bearcats' 16 hits represent their most since collecting 22 hits in the same game against St. Peter's.
In the second game, the Bearcats opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Kopec scored the first run on an error and Walter singed home the second run.
Santos completed the scoring in the top of the fifth inning when she doubled home Walter.
Pappas improved to 2-4 while Kylie Kenney took the loss, dropping her record to 8-8.
Sophomore outfielder
Laney Harbaugh finished the day 3-for-8 (.375) and scored three times. Roberts went 3-for-4 in the first game while L'Amoreaux was 1-for-3
Binghamton hit .409 as a team during the doubleheader and compiled a 1.16 ERA.
"We are super proud of the girls for their effort today," head coach
Jess Bump said. "We have been talking a lot about executing with runners in scoring position and they really stepped up and got that done today. Our pitchers continue to keep us in games, and both Brianna and Sophia had great command and shut down a good offensive Bryant team."
The two teams conclude their three-game series with a single game at noon on Sunday.
NOTES: With eight wins so far this year, Roberts has recorded the most wins by a Binghamton freshman pitcher since Ryan Gibson had nine victories in 2017 ... L'Amoreaux is 5-for-16 (.312) in her last five games played. She has homered twice during that stretch.Â
