Baseball rolls over Bryant 12-4 to even series

Bearcats use 13-hit attack to break away early; Driscoll improves to 7-0 with sharp pitching performance

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Visiting Binghamton baseball (25-18, 11-9 America East) scored multiple runs in four straight innings and used 12 runs on 13 hits to topple Bryant (24-20, 11-9 AE) 12-4 Saturday afternoon at Conaty Park.  

Down 1-0 early, BU plated two runs in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take command. The teams then traded three runs apiece down the stretch.

In the second, sophomore DH Evin Sullivan singled and junior right fielder Mike Gunning doubled with one out. Sullivan scored on a wild pitch and freshman shortstop Mike Stellrecht hit an RBI single to give BU a 2-1 lead.

In the third, Sullivan collected an RBI double and sophomore third baseman Devan Bade added a two-out RBI triple. Another run-scoring wild pitch made it 5-1.

In the fourth, sophomore second baseman Nick Roselli produced an RBI single and senior first baseman Kevin Gsell plated another run with a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth, senior left fielder Cavan Tully brought home two with a triple to right center, extending BU's lead to 9-1.

Junior starter Gabe Driscoll (W, 7-0) remained unbeaten with a strong showing. Driscoll retired 12 in a row at one point and went 6.0 innings. He scattered five hits and three runs with six strikeouts and became the only 7-game winner in the America East. Junior reliever John Lumpinski worked the final three innings and only allowed two hits. 

Sullivan went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Tully went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Gunning and Bade had two hits and an RBI apiece.

The teams will play the rubber game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
