Bearcats welcome seasoned collegiate transfers, talented freshman forward

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton men's basketball has further enhanced its 2023-24 roster with the addition of four student-athletes, head coach Levell Sanders announced on Thursday.

Set to join the Bearcats family are graduate transfer guard Symir Torrence (Syracuse, N.Y./Syracuse University), senior guard Tymu Chenery (Philadelphia, Pa./Quinnipiac), sophomore guard Chris Walker (Wellington, Fla./Arkansas-Little Rock) and freshman forward Gavin Walsh (Baltimore, Md./IMG Academy).

The quartet joins incoming freshmen guards Evan Ashe and Max Sims, who signed NLIs back in November. Returning from last year's squad are Armon Harried, Dan Petcash, Tariq Balogun, Taveion White and Masud Stewart.

Torrence played the last two seasons at Syracuse after two years at Marquette. He has 113 collegiate games on his resume. A talented point guard, Torrence has experience facing teams from the ACC and BIG EAST in his career. He is a 40 percent shooter and has compiled 220 career assists. Last season with the Orange, Torrence averaged more than 11 minutes and shot 45 percent for a 17-win SU team. One of his SU gems was a 40-minute showing against Duke in the 2022 ACC quarterfinals. Last season, he scored in double figures in wins over Lehigh (10 pts.) and Oakland (12) and registered three or more assists nine times. At Marquette, he played in 52 games over two seasons. Torrence was a consensus Top 50 recruit (ESPN.com and Rivals.com) out of Syracuse Academy of Science. He also competed for Vermont Academy prep, where he averaged 19.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 5.8 assists.

"The thing I'm looking forward to most is Symir's ability to make his teammates better," Sanders said. "His teammates are going to really enjoy playing with him. He is a throwback point guard in that he looks to get his teammates involved before he looks to score. He has great size for a point guard. People will get a chance to see how well he defends and takes pride in defense. Symir and Masud will form a really good point guard duo."

Chenery played 85 games in three seasons for Quinnipiac, including all 32 games this season as the Bobcats went 20-12 and placed third in the MAAC. He's averaged 7.6 points and 3.4 rebounds over his first three collegiate seasons. This winter, Chenery tallied 12 points against Penn State and hit double figures three more times. As a freshman, he earned MAAC All-Rookie honors after averaging nearly 10 points and four rebounds. A Prep Hoops Top 15 recruit in Virginia, Chenery averaged 12.6 points and 6.4 rebounds at Episcopal High School in Alexandria.

"Tymu is a versatile forward who will be able to play multiple positions and also guard multiple positions," Sanders said. "He is exactly the type of student-athlete we want to recruit. He brings a lot of experience and has the ability to stretch the floor and guard the other team's best player … which makes him very valuable."

Walker played his first collegiate season at Little Rock last winter after red-shirting the 2021-22 season with an injury. Last season he averaged 7.2 points and 2.8 rebounds and shot 36 percent from 3-point range for a Trojans team that competed in the Ohio Valley Conference, which produced three national postseason tournament teams. Walker scored in double digits five times, including a season-high 18 points with four assists against Memphis. He was twice honored as OVC Freshman of the Week. In high school, he led Wellington High to the 2020 7A state finals and was a McDonald's All-American nominee.

"We wanted to add perimeter shooting and that's what Chris does really well," Sanders said. "With his ability to stretch the floor and make plays he is a welcomed addition. He is another versatile player who we will be able to use in many ways."

Walsh was a first team All-Metro and was an All-MIAA and All-BCL selection in high school. He totaled 1,033 points in three seasons at Loyola Blakefield and one at IMG Academy. In his final season at Loyola, he averaged 18.6 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists. At IMG last winter, he averaged 11.0 points and 8.0 rebounds. Walsh was ranked No. 14 overall in the 2022 Prep Hoops Md./D.C. rankings and was the No. 3 power forward.

"We recruited Gavin for a long time and are happy he decided to join the Bearcat family," Sanders said. "Coming off a prep year at IMG Academy, Gavin has really improved across the board as a basketball player. He has always been a really good student. Gavin is going to be able to make plays for himself and his teammates. He will be able to play any position in the frontcourt. He gives us another versatile player who can play and defend multiple positions. We look forward to getting Gavin and all the new student-athletes here in the summer for workouts."
