Women's soccer plays to scoreless draw against Canisius

Bearcats enjoy 18-5 shots advantage but settle for tie in home opener

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer (0-1-1) peppered the Canisius (0-1-1) defense with 18 shots but couldn't find the winner and settled for a 0-0 draw in the team's home opener Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The Bearcats held possession nearly 70 percent of the first half and generated 12 shots and several golden opportunities. In the second half, play was a little more balanced but the best chances still sat on the BU side.

"We had the opportunities but have to put them away," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Our movement and possession was good and we created enough attacking chances ... we just need to be a little sharper with that final pass and final finishing touch. If we do that, it changes everything. I thought if we got that first goal, the game would've really opened up but we didn't have it today. That's the nature of soccer. But I was pleased with the performance and the opportunities."

The first scoring chance was actually a two-for-one opportunity in the seventh minute. Junior forward Hannah Mimas sprung free on the right and dribbled deep into the box before her point-blank shot was blocked by the Canisius keeper from four yards. Classmate Hannah Knych then rolled the rebound across the goalmouth to freshman Paige Luke, whose blast from six yards was smothered by the keeper. In the 15th minute, graduate defender Grace Vittoria banked a ball off the crossbar and then in the 34th minute, sophomore midfielder Alex Marsteller's rip from 24 yards out was deflected over the bar.

Junior keeper Kaitlyn Williams was called on to make just one save and notched her fourth career shutout. She came out to smother a dangerous threat in the 16th minute and intercepted a few other attack opportunities in the second half.

Binghamton next begins a daunting two-game road swing against Power 5 opponents when the Bearcats travel to South Orange, N.J. to face Seton Hall on Thursday.
